Progress update, if anyone wants to see progress pics!

Finished removing all the carpet and the glued-down pad:

Removed closet doors, trim, ready to cut off sides. This is where the black couch will go (loveseat):

I also got a GREAT idea for making faux rock walls from a coworker who is big into really professional fish tanks. He has done it on a much smaller scale, but the same rules would apply. More to come on that, but here's what his version looks like:

Nice that would look sweet.

if I may be so bold as to make an suggestion..

if you're going to use the room primarily for movies, why not turn your plan 90 degrees and put the couch on one far wall with a ceiling mounted projector and then either an electric or manual screen on the far wall? You could then put your armor in the closet with can spotlights over them. You'd get a bigger picture that way with a better view and and an armor alcove would look sweet! :up

This looks like it's going to be pretty sweet..

I like the butcher paper idea, but I feel that by using the butcher paper with little to no hard structure behind it will cause some cleaning problems...

Do you think dust would be a major problem collecting in the crevices of the paper?

Also in terms of the lighting, both recessed and track, be careful of fire hazards!

God knows you don't need to start a fire with those warm lights and that room full of paper!!!

Those are some of the concerns that came to mind when looking at your pictures...

Also I LOVE the idea of putting your batsuit in that closet. You can then make it look like the vault that Keaton has in his Cave...That would be legit!

That is an interesting idea! However, this room is not going to be used for movies. This is really just for 1) displaying costumes 2) maybe a home office sometimes and 3) playing Xbox. Regardless, that's still a very interesting idea that I didn't think of. See why the BOTB is so great!? I'm going to have to try that in SketchUp.

My wife and I each have our own home offices, so that's not an issue. And I only even remember that I have an Xbox about once a year. Although I will DEFINITELY remember when Arkham City comes out! For movies, we are going to build a good sized home theater in the room next to this one, which is about 18' x 20'. The room next to that on the other side will be a wine tasting room.

Of course we had to do the Batcave first!

All valid points. I'm not sure about the dust, but I'm not too worried about that. Same thing would probably happen on any surface that had any horizontalness to it.
I was thinking to maybe add chickenwire to the wall behind the paper for a little more rigidity. We'll see though - I'm not 100% sure that the paper is going to work. Plus the fire hazards! I am not sure how I would build a vault-looking area in there since I'm not so great on the carpentry. But maybe we can think of something.

And here's an update:

It has taken awhile to get the closet torn out because I didn't want to damage the surrounding area. But, I think this hole will work. I'm going to drywall the areas that are open to the inside of the wall just so that there is a wall behind the paper or whatever I end up using for "rock". Obviously I will take out the hanger rod and shelf, but I'm using that shelf right now as you can see!

Image

Here's what the ceiling looks like with those floor joists. I'm going to take out that flourescent lighting, and then paint this all flat black. I got a power sprayer yesterday from Home Depot to do the job.

Image

My total cost at this point is $118, mostly for that sprayer. I'm sure the cost will skyrocket once the fake rock starts going in!

Update: decided not to go with paper for the walls because it just wouldn't look right. So spent about 7 hours today stapling up and forming chicken wire to be the armature for the paper mâché I'm going to use. It looks pretty good with just the chicken wire up -- it seems like it's coming together!

Here are some pics of the chickenwire work. These pics don't really show how it is sculpted ... but anywhere there is something funny on the wall, it protrudes out a lot at that point. Otherwise, it is just sort of randomly shaped.

Halfway into this I realized I needed to have the parts where the posters are going to be hung to be flat, so had to do that. You can see a little of that in the pics. I also tried to cut in around the outlets so it looks kinda like those were cut out of the rock -- but I couldn't do that exactly the way I wanted to because the staples kept pulling out of the drywall.

Anyway, next step is spraying the ceiling all flat black. Then I'll be mixing up some paper mache. Anybody have any experience with that? I haven't done it since I was 5. I also want to be sure to prevent the build-up of mold, which I understand can be a problem.

Awesomeness, so is the papermache a replacement for the fishtank stuff (btw, what exactly was the fishtank stuff, anyway)?
