Cookie Monster, Ernie and Freddy Monster

Hi Guys,

Just finished a few more puppets over my holiday. Had fun building these guys for my two year old son.

First is Cookie Monster (well at least a similar looking puppet, not an exact replica). I couldn't do the proper googly eyes due to safety for my son (choking hazard) so I opted to leave them attached slightly loose to the head and displaced the pupils. When operated it gives the same illusion to the googly eyes buy is much safer for my little boy (most important).

Ernie is just a head and body. He started out as another puppet but I realized he started to look like Ernie so I thought, what they hey, I'll make an Ernie. The head isn't quite the right shape, the hair isn't wide enough (should be closer to the ears on each side) and the body is way too small but I had to shrink it due to lack of left over material to finish him. I'll get a batch of proper muppet fleece and dye is the right color and do Ernie over again and probably donate this one to one of my friends here with kids who watch Sesame street. The third puppet is a custom design just for fun. We called him Freddy Monster and my son loves him.

Anyway, onto the pics, hope you all enjoy. These are just made for fun/personal enjoyment, so aren't quite made to be exact replicas, more similar likeness to get the general idea of the character they are representing (enough for my son to know). My son picked cookie monster before he even had eyes or a finished mouth. Just the body with separate head and he knew who it was.

Cheers,

Greg

Those are just too cool. Ernie looks kinda like a young preschool version. Very nice.

For some reason I read that as "Freddy" and assumed it would be a different, entirely unsuitable for your son, puppet... :doh

Cookie Monster is way cool. I'll have to think about one for myself!

BTW, meant to post this in your other puppet thread Greg...

OMG! I love the Muppets. Do you make these for others? I would LOVE to get a Kermit puppet and play with my children. I do a MEAN Kermit the Frog voice!

Re: Cookie Monster, Ernie and Freddy Monster

Thanks for the comments. Hey mmccreadie, love the Fozzie Bear. I was thinking about making a fozzie but decided to do cookie instead. I figured he was easier, and I kinda like the character a bit more than Fozzie. My son absolutely loves Cookie, he asks for him all the time now, over every other puppet (including Elmo - much to my surprise and joy). Still trying to finish Ernie, then I'm going to try my hand at a few originals. A friend has asked me to build some puppets for an adult TV show he has this idea for. Should be fun, but a lot of work. I kind of want to see what I can come up with on my own characters.

To answer some of the questions above, sorry, but these are not available. To be honest, making it for my son, or a kid I know or see a lot of, is worth it. To see them enjoy it for many years. But these are a real pain to make, and I barely have the time to make the few I have made for my son, let alone the others my friend has asked me to make.

In terms of replica or licensed items. Under no circumstances would I ever make those available. I have made one or two puppets for friends or charity auctions, but they were my own characters and not existing copyright characters. I have only given away one kermit to a close friends son, because he loved the muppets even more than I did.

What I can offer, is advice to create your own. All of my puppets have come from purchased puppet patterns, some requiring slight alterations to turn more into the character I was trying to create. When I built my first kermit, I had never sewn in my life. I went onto youtube and typed in Henson Stitch. There were a few videos that showed how to do the Henson stitch. I hand stitch almost exclusively with that stitch. It takes time to get it right, but it works in just about every application I've tried to far. The patterns are available from project puppet (just google them). They may seem expensive for what they are, but they are totally worth it, and the number of characters you can create with some of the cheaper, more basic patterns by either slightly altering, or enlarging them is amazing. I've seen some great kermit builds built using the glorified sock puppet pattern available there. But there is a pulled apart photo of the MR photo puppet replica of Kermit floating around on the web that others have created patterns from. My kermit's legs, feet, arms and head came from that pattern. The body was simply the alternative body in the simple series patterns.

Hope that information is of some help.

Greg
