Re: AFM - issue #30 - Dullam/Causey forever car
Some specs for those who might be curious:
The body is made from a High-temp epoxy, very warp resistant, extremely rigid. Will see temps over 500 deg. without surface deflection. average thickness is about 1/4 inch thick. In plain english, as Blackwood noted, I can slam it with a hammer, and nothing happens. Windshield is 1/4" U.V.\Mar resistant lexan, will stop most bullet penatration. I was showed an example chunk that had a bullet lodged in about half-way through but could not penatrate (44 mag. If I remember, pretty crazy).
The basis of the running board is built onto the chassis using 1/4" steel. Jumping up and down you feel no flexing or give.
The chassis construction is bottom up design using 2X4,2X2,square tubes, and 1 1/2" rounds. 118" wheel base, using a circle track type cage design, i.e. cross diagonal reinforcement for contortional stiffness, and weight. i.e. say if you were to get hit by another vehicle from the side the car would more or less be moved rather than fold in half. And the driver and passenger are protected by the maze of cross-diagonal caging. On a commercial vehicle you have doors, so the contortional stiffness cannot be built in the sides, and there much less protection from a side impact than on this car, not to mention the windshield will never spider crack or shatter. Rack and pinion steering. No power steering. Fuel cells, muscle car mentality. I miss the days when I could do anything I needed to to my 67 mustang.
Each part of the body keys into the next part of the body like a giant puzzle, and has adjoining ledges that come in full contact, so the body is not fully chassis dependant. We decided not to split the fins apart as we sort of thought it looked a little silly, like it might be taking off in flight or something, so the top fin is one piece, but it does come to a very sharp point as you can see. I hate to sacrifice look and feel for anything.
The fun part, and a lot of the attraction for me, was the challenge of course, and the fact that there are so many things that can be played with. For example the lighting underneath the ribs and below the powerplant, can be played with and changed up, or made to change based on some condition, like say when the canopy closes, the color hue goes from cobalt blue to a burning redishness, or whatever. Have a flame system worked out but not installed as of yet. The neat thing is you can change up stuff, and play with the detailing endlessly, would sometime like to put visible moving parts in between the ribs on the sides.
I decided in the begining that I would not make a flimsy piece of crap, but rather design something that will last and has extreme structural integrity. basicaly the best it could possibly be, or not do it at all. I didn't want to end up with an amusement park display, or a cheezy anything on this project.
Bob C. will eventually put his own ideas into his, and I will do various things from time to time to mine. I personaly enjoy the climb of the mountain, and I wanted to get the benifit of having done it.
Oh, one more note here, I would like to thank lori, for the florida pictures which without, would have made seeing various things from critical angles almost impossible. Yes, lori you will most definatly get a ride.

Re: AFM - issue #30 - Dullam/Causey forever car
Should be a GREAT issue.Along with the "siamese Bob Boys" the issue will focus around superhero related kits of course(it is a kit mag after all),an Alex Ross interview, plus an article by myself on creating(we think) the 1/1 Michael Keaton statue,on which i'm using Bob D's 89 armour ,cape etc(which is beatiful I might add, exact, complete with ribbing).Depends on my timeline.
