Batman Code

Doc Savage has a formal written code that guides his conduct. I've been experimenting with this idea for Batman, coming up with the following:

- Above all, I swear to do everything in my power to prevent for others what happened to me. I swear to stop potential violence and murder in their tracks in Gotham City.

- I'm lucky to be born rich, able-minded and bodied, and will put all my resources to best use.

- I must learn and practice to be the best, most educated and developed mind and body that I can be. Only in this way can I have a fighting chance of carrying out my mission.

- Gotham's streets and dark alleys and rooftops are mine, and Gotham's crooks are gonna be mine!

- I will do everything I can to protect those close and dear to me, even if it means being extra tough on them. Better that than having them badly harmed because of me.

- I will not kill! I will not join in deadly criminal ways. A cowardly gun-toting crook killed my parents. I will prove my battles can win by NEVER using any murderous device whatsoever.

- I will, however, beat up the crooked bastards bad, and rub their faces in bat guano, and love it!

- In my monstrous guise, and as a predator on crime, I am and will continue to be all thugs' worst nightmare!

- I'm a BAD ASS with a moral code. A pouncing street demon who gives all I've got to overcome criminal violence and restore honor and greatness to Gotham.

- Driven? All right, so be it. It's a never-ending battle I can't ultimately expect to win, but I'll take it.

- I have maybe 30 years to be able to do this. I'll make every one of those years count.

- I'm haunted by not being able to be comfortable and contented as Bruce Wayne. But my life is not about comfort and contentment. It's about commitment, perseverance, and resolve.

Gotta have a code. This one, especially the last line, makes the Bat sound very lonely though. He is driven but that code reflects none of the part of him that has formed personal relationships. I don't remember what Doc Savage's code was just that he had a killer George Hamilton tan......Was that some sort of bronzing agent?

Good point on alienation, BatMack. Batman/Bruce is a complex man, sometimes incompletely rendered as either the driven Batman with Bruce Wayne completely submerged, or by showing Batman himself as always cold. The duality is fluid and challenging to capture - or my current rendering of such a code may be biased by a given mood rather than being long-term consistent.

Yeah, Doc Savage has a perpetual tan.

Doc's Code:

"Let me strive every moment of my life to make myself better and better, to the best of my ability, so that all may profit by it. Let me think of the right, and lend my assistance to those who need it, with no regard for anything but justice. Let me take what comes with a smile, without loss of courage. Let me be considerate of my country, my fellow citizens and my associates in everthing I say and do. Let me do right to all, and wrong no man."

Re: Batman Code

Doc's code is actually based off of the RANGER CREED which in turn is based off of ROGER's RANGER's circa 1750's:

The Ranger Creed

Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high "espirit de corps" of the Rangers.

Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of a battle by land, sea or air, I accept the fact as a Ranger, my country expects me to move farther, faster, and fight harder than any other soldier.

Never shall I ever fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong, and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task, whatever it may be. One hundred percent and than some.

Gallently will I show the world that I am a specialy selected and well trained soldier. My courtesy to superiors, my neatness of dress, and my care of my equiptment shall set the example for others to follow.

Eenergetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle, for I am better trained and will fight them with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embaress my country.

Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission, though I be the lone survivor.

RANGERS LEAD THE WAY

Rogers Rangers, Standing Orders

1. Don't forget nothing

2. Have your musket clean as a whistle, hatchet scoured, sixty rounds of powder and bell, and be ready to move at a minute's warning

3. When you are on the march, act the way you would, if you was sneaking up on a deer;
see the enemy first

4. Tell the truth about what you see and what you you do. There is an Army depending on us for correct information. You can lie all you please when you tell other folks
about the Rangers. But never lie to an Officer or Ranger.

5. Don't never take a chance you don't have to.

6. When we're on the march, we march single file, far enough apart so one shot can't go through two men.

7. If we strike swamps, or soft ground, we spread out abreast so it's hard to track us.

8. When we march, we keep moving until dark,
so as to give the enemy the least possible chance at us.

9. Whe we camp, half the party stays awake
while the others half sleeps.

10. If we take prisoners, we keep 'em separate till we have had time to examine them, so they can't cook up a story between 'em.

11. Don't ever march home the same way.
Take a different route so you won't be ambushed.

12. No matter whether we travel in big parties or little ones, each party has to keep a scout 20 yards ahead, 20 yards on each flank, and 20 yards in the rear, so the main body can't be surprised and wiped out.

13. Every night you will be told where to meet if surrounded by a superior force.

14. Don't sit down to eat without posting sentries.

15. Don't sleep beyond dawn;
dawn's when the French and Indians attack

16. Don't cross a river by a regular ford.

17. If somebody's trailing you, make a circle, come back onto your own trail,
and ambush the folks that aim to ambush you.

18. Don't stand up when the enemy's coming against you. Kneel down, lie down, hide behind a tree.

19. Let the enemy come till he's close enough to touch. Then let him have it and jump out and finish him up with your hatchet.

Major Robert Rogers 1759

Re: Batman Code

Interesting, Batmann539, although the connection looks like a long stretch. Without debating the point, is there documentation that Lester Dent and/or Street & Smith executives, drew on Ranger principles for Doc's code? Neither Doc nor Batman are warrior killers, and I'd like to stick to the subject of a code for Batman, which BatMack's observation included. Doc's code was covered only as an example of superheroes having codes; and aside from a brief answer to the Dent/S&S question, I'd like us to stay on topic.

Batmans Decalogue:

1. I will honour my Father and Mother
2. I will uphold the law
3. I will not kill
4. I will not lie
5. I will not steal
6. I will instill fear in the hearts of all criminals
7. I will train my body and mind to the peak of perfection
8. I will place the needs of others before mine
9. I will covet nothing but justice
10.I will not suffer fools gladly

The Jokers would be:

F**k 'em if they can't take a joke

My favourite is the Apache(pilots) Creed:

Go deep
Kill everything you see
Get the F**k out

I wasn't trying to hijack your post or anything.

My dad is a huge Doc fan, has all the original books and seems to always be reading one, he was also a Ranger.

He's researced it more than I have and told me about it once or twice in the many conversations we've had about it, he has consiberable more years and knowledge about it than I do so I won't pretend to detail the specifics.

Fair enough Sean, and you might find out how your dad might know. And TJ, your Decalogue is really good and to the point! Did you make it up or get it from somewhere?

I made those up,while looking at the commandments.

I rearranged the order as I thought Bruce might put them.
