I challenge you..........

I challenge each and every person that reads this thread..........not to a one on one confrontation, or a war of words, or even a battle of wits......I challenge all of you TO MAKE A DIFFERANCE in someone's life.
I challenge you to take that extra step in helping someone that needs it. To do something that puts a smile on someone's face. Lend a hand to that little old lady that needs help with her groceries being put into her car.
I challenge you to STOP THE HATRED towards one another. Whether it is someone on the boards that you don't like because he/she has a differance of opinion, or that person with the different color skin walking in "your" part of town. I challenge you to make that person your friend, to ask them how are they doing today, or to do something that makes that person glad that they met you.
I challenge you to LEAD BY EXAMPLE......to take time away from your busy schedule, and show that neighborhood kid that there is more to life than being "the most popular" in school, or going with a "clique" that is doing things that are wrong. Take that kid and show him/her that it is better to be kind to people than to make someone hurt by their actions, or words. I challenge each and everyone one of you to BE A HERO in someone's life................Are you up for the challenge?

Re: I challenge you..........

Personally... I struggle to do exactly that on a daily basis. And I do exemplify the word "struggle".

Negative events that take place in life, often force people into a dark corner where it's very easy to become a staunch pessimist. Only the strong overcome that.

For quite a long time, I woke up in the morning and went to bed each night, angry and bitter and near the act of homicide, due to my ex-wife and her "games". It takes it toll on you in the long run, where it places you apart from others, whether you know it or not.

Then something ELSE happens, to give you an enormous kick in the ass, to wake you up to the fact that you MUST carry on and get over it. You realize that there's other people in the world that have far worse events taking place in their lives that make your own troubles look miniscule in the process. It's like suddenly finding yourself standing alone on a beach somewhere, with no noise or commotion and the sun is shining brightly with a nice cool wind... When usually you're in a place similar to Times Square at around 5:30pm and it's raining sideways while people keep pushing you back and forth like they're passing a ball around from one to another.

For me... It took witnessing an absolutely, brutally violent car wreck, that took place right in front of me. I saw a woman die a death that just... It was just...

It wasn't her death that did it... It was knowing that the guy who was driving the car she was in, now has to live with his stupid actions for the rest of his life and has to face his and her family forever with that in mind, as well as not having his left arm anymore due to the same accident.

Unfortunately, it takes a huge kick in the backside to get people to see things clearly. Rarely do people suddenly wake up and realize that their problems aren't the only ones that matter, without some kind of outside influence, guiding them to that objective. Whether people actually "see" that "event" take place and learn from it, is another story entirely.

My big challenge is my son. Sheeesh... He's at the stage where he confronts everything you say and doesn't show a single sign of learning from anything you try and teach him. He pushes buttons, tempts fate by doing what he knows is wrong in hopes he doesn't get caught, he whines, play-acts, and then he pushes buttons even MORE... Uuuuuuuuhhhhhh.

It's the stronger people that put lesser things aside, to focus on those that are more important.

Things like... Babysitters!

Re: I challenge you..........

I take that challenge everyday...

As a father I try and make a point everyday to listen to my kids and teach them or reinforce life lessons to them. Like don't smoke or take drugs because you know you're parents will get made at you. When the opportunity presents itself I guarantee we won't be around, so don't do it because it's bad for your body, mind, and spirit.

As a Federal Agent I strive to treat even criminals with respect even if they don't deserve it or reciprocate the same to me.

As a Drill Sergeant in the Army Reserve I make it a goal every time I put on my campaign hat to impart some knowledge on a soldier to help them come home alive in whatever war front they find themselves in. I handle them the same way I would want my kids handled.

I take the challenge but like any challenge there are struggles and I have to remind myself of the good in life because I have grown cynical as well because I see the parts of humanity that suck. Between being in two war zones and constantly doing undercover work with life's scum it's hard for me to put a smile on my face... BUT I wake up every morning and remind myself that life could be worse and while I can't change the world, I can influence the things that go on around me and by doing so good things can happen.

Sean

Re: I challenge you..........

I once gave a homeless man bus fare so he could get back to his family safely.

he said i "saved his life"

sometimes the smallest act of kindness can be taken as "heroic" by the person on the receiving end.

i was wearing a black and silver Superman t-shirt that day.

wearing the shirt wasn't what drove me to show kindness to a stranger. i didn't even think about it, until the homeless man said "are you really him?"

i felt like i'd been knocked back a few feet.

all i did was give this guy some loose cash to help him get home. i'm no hero. i'm a nobody.

but that one guy seemed to think otherwise.

it's like the parable of the little girl and the beach full of starfish.

a man walks along a beach and sees it's full of dried up, dying starfish. a little girl is there, gently picking them up one by one and tossing them back into the water. the man asks "why even bother? there are so many, you can't possibly make a difference to them all."

the little girl throws one, then points to it and says "but to THAT one, it made a difference."

the man bent down and starting picking them up alongside the girl until the tide came in.

...and that's your moment of zen for the day :)

I once gave some money to an inmate who had just gotten out of jail and i was talking to on the street (only in NY kids).
The next step would have been giving him shelter for the night but i really didn't feel confortable with that.
right now I and a bunch of friends are helping a friend get out of the coke spiral... :frown

Thanks bro.
she's doing ok so far. she finally joined AA meetings again and her parents were warned. she hasn't touch a drop of alcohol in a week even though we went "out" (symphony in the park) last night. but the watch is paying attention nonetheless.

Wow, what an amazing call too arms. I'm floored. I think this is exactly what a lot of people need to kick them in the ass, and, motivate them. Thank you Dimensional Bat for inspiring me.
