thanks JCB. If you hit the website you can see some more pics of them showing a bit more detail of areas of interest. Happy to answer questions on what's what on them as well as lend my 2¢ as to how to improve them.

I hear that some had issues with the video loading. If you have the right codec and it still doesn't work (make sure you scroll down the page, they open in a window below) try opening the links in a new window. If that doesn't work let me know and I'll see what I can do.

The videos worked fine for me.

I was impressed with the moving wingtips, very neat.

I think I can work out most of the plumbing but where did you get the pneumatic struts are they auto parts or from a model plane?

What would you do to improve them?

What I have in mind is to hide a similar unit in a Batcape and use it to spread the cape, hopefully I can modify the cape to look as much like a bats wings as possible while still loking like a cape when folded.

OOPS, sorry missed the questions :doh

Almost all of the pneumatics were from clippard, including the cylinders. double acting 1" bore and I believe 2" stroke...I have the info around here on the receipt that I could dig up.

To improve them, add bearings at the pivot points, they seemed to stick a little and as you saw don't open at the same time/speed. Tips are pretty good, but the wings themselves might be tightened down too much or have some other strain on the mechanical side, the hose is the same length, but maybe I could shorten the "slow" side to fix this. CO2 is not idea for this set up and you have to change the cartridges quickly as they freeze up and pressure drops. Probably some other small things in there as well, but those were the big points I had issues with.

You could probably do something simple in a cape, one cylinder down the spine that pulls on two fiberglass rods in the tips, as the cylinder retracts the rods pivot and spread out. Would also be fairly light due to minimal complexity. I'm thinking under 10 parts or so. Biggest problem I see right now would be the weight of the cape and distance needed to spread.

Thanks BGBT, not really much more to update on my part, but the work goes on, if I have to do any of the CGI stuff there might be more updates, but for now anything that happens will probably be noted on the site itself or on the blog.

I could run bungee cable along the wing edges to help pull them straight and take some of the weight off the system.
May look a bit more natural as birds/bats snap their wings out but fold them slowly when they settle.

I'm planning to use a vinyl material (like car seat)
About how much weight would you say each of your wings could hold?

well, with a cylinder you could adjust the speed of opening and closing with a needle valve. You would have 2, one for opening, one for closing, if you want the snap opening you open that valve all the way or leave it out (but that would leave it non adjustable, and potentially dangerous to others around) but the closer valve could be opened to half way and speed would be roughly half that of opening.

Not sure what my wings would handle, but they have cylinders of all sizes, the large the cyl, the more it'll handle (as long as you have he airflow)
