OK, I got a question for ya'll. How would you make a cape appear to look natural and seem useful if you were in the middle of a fight sequence? i.e. I would think in real life a big cape would be a liability, but how would you adapt and make it look good during an elaborate fight sequence? Would you HAVE to have a special cape? Would it have to be thinner, lighter, or could you make a heavier cape look good so it doesn't seem silly and out of place in a fight.

Hey Tim, that's awesome. 30 years of Judo is some serious dedication and to be able to grapple with girls is fun also. emoticon I loved doing Judo, at my old Dojo we trained in Ryobu Kai Karate, Judo, Aikido and Iaido.

Bob, in my opinion the cape definetely has to be light and not attached to the cowl with a serious adhesive, something like some velcro, so the person in the cape doesn't get choked out, in case a stunt goes wrong. The last time I wore my full Batsuit, last year at Halloween, I was doing full front flips and rolls and managed to keep the cape from getting in my way. I also demonstrated with a friend a way of turning the cape into a weapon itself. I thought of an idea, as Batman is going after some thugs, a thug behind him grabs my cape and starts to pull me towards him, I then move my body to the inside and use my cape as a grappling device and am able to take him to the ground and sort of tie him up with it. I demonstrated it with Chris once and everyone loved how I was able to use it as a tool. Another cool thing is, when you flip the cape in someones face, you can hide a kick or punch behind it, so immediately after he flinches from the cape shooting forward, the fist or kick comes in hidden behind the cape and connects. When we get together, I'll show you some cool applications with the cape. Often Ninja used capes, because they are great distractions. The art of temporarily blinding an opponent in Ninjutsu is known as Metsubushi (not Mitsubishi the car). It translates, "sight removers".

Zendragon,
What a really small world it is. I read your post about Professor Wally Jay and I remembered my father talking about him more than once as he is a 3rd degree in Judo. I emailed him today and here was his response when I asked about him.

"I know him as one of my Uncle's classmates from the old hawaiian system. I worked out at his house several times. There are several other instructors who all took classes from the founder of Kodenkan Judo in hawaiian and then they all left some going to CA and David Kalama going to Guam where I started. David is considered one of the old masters and Wally Jay is one who has produced lots of US champions and now one of the known masters from Kodokan style not Kodenkan style which was the original hawaiian style."

David Kalama is my father's Uncle and from I what I understand is a Grandmaster now.

Talk about small circles. That's pretty cool ZD.

Sean

I still say razor sharp daggers in the tips of the scallops and use the all latex cape as a whip. You take them out by striking their throat at a distance before you even take one strike close to them. You better darn well know they mean to kill you before doing that though.

I have practiced this action with my latex cape and it is very fast and very powerful because of the latex's stretch ability.

Also if your cape is heavy enough you can knock them right down by it slamming into them.

Wow! You guys really know your martial arts history. Looks like I'm not the only one who has read "Comprehensive Asian Fighting Arts." It was REQUIRED reading by my Jujutsu Shihan. Anyway, great to see so many dedicated modern day warriors here.

My MA background includes training in Shotokan, Taekwon Do, Judo, Jujutsu, and many weapons arts taught in tandem with Jujutsu. My favorite of the weapons are the Bo staff, Jo staff, and my favorite of all is the Samurai sword (Iaijutsu/Kenjutsu). I've been training for 21 years total.

I've always wanted to do a really good demo in the bat suit. I like the way you think Jants (and Paul) about using the cape as a weapon. I'd hate to think that Bruce was so vain as just wanting to look cool in costume...emoticon I'd think that those ears on top of the cowl & the fins on the gloves could be made into some pretty formidable weapons too.

Just thinking out loud here...

But I would say it could be INCREDIBLY cool if some of you more knowledgable martial artists were to create & post video demonstrations of your diverse fighting styles & moves adapted to work in full costume like a great comic/action movie screen test.

I mean fan films are totally great, but they take forever, and what people really want to see are some good costumed fight scenes, right?

Flips, chops, kicks, weapons, cape sweeps, multiple bad guys, the whole nine yards...

Yeah, definitely that would be very cool. It's fun to hear you guys describe these things but it would be awesome to SEE it.

It's something uniquely "suited" (pun intended) to this group.

I have always wanted to do something like that also. Definetely will eventually. Until then, you guys will see a lot of awesome martial art choreography as soon as our Batman Beyond Fan Film comes out. :up

Remember though Artsee, Batman doesn't kill. Razor sharp dagger to the throat would be a slow painful death. Heavy weights at the ends of the cape would be cool though.

You are right Jants. I would never espouse that use of force. I don't even believe in killing even as a penalty. I just found it would be effective and thought I would describe it. There is no real Batman so it is left up to the fans to decide what might go in the real world and the real world is what we are talking about so...
