Re: Leg armor mobility... Some questions for the pros!

Unfortunately, I have not been able to get any pics so far this weekend. This is the only pic I have from Halloween, albeit a very crappy picture.

Image

I don't know if you can see it, but the underside of the leg armor is completely open (only exposed undersuit at inner thigh from knees to crotch). The quadriceps and hamstrings are covered with latex and the entire pelvic area is covered (360 deg). The main areas of stiffness are in the hip flexor area, as in when trying to crouch or sit, and when trying to move the leg laterally as in a side kick position. Raising the knee to chamber a side or roundhouse kick is difficult too. I was really afraid that moving too agressively in either of these directions would rip them.

I just didn't know if this was normal for this type of leg armor. If it is, then I'm whining about nothing. If not, then I'll have to reevaluate.

I can't really make out the details of that armor, but I don't think Lou made them. As far as I know, he doesn't make latex armor pieces. Plasti-dip stiffens stuff up, but won't stiffen it up that much. It's probably just thick latex pieces that are hard to wear.

Well then, I'm not sure who actually made them. I got them from Lou & was under the impression that he made them, but it could've just been an extra set that he had lying around that he had gotten from someone else. Anyway, that's not really an issue I guess...

The latex is fairly thick, but it was pretty flexible. The more I think about it, I'm thinking it's either the Plasti-dip or the glue (DAP WW Contact Cement), or a combination. I put like 4 or so coats of plasti on, but they were really thick coats. Anyway, I'm going to eventually strip them down & finish them again & try to get the coats much thinner & fewer. I think they'll be much better when I can really take my time & do them right. As I said before, when I did them, it was pretty rushed & I didn't do as good a job on them as I would've liked. If nothing else, I'll have them ready for trade once I finish them right.

Also keep in mind that when you put glue on an item that was flexible, let's say spandex, that item will lose all flexability in the area where the glue is in the fibers.

Those look like Lou (Phaint's) legs. I have a pair and have the same problem with mobility. They look good but mobility is a problem. I was thinking about cutting the cod piece off and then remounting it. I think that I have seen some Panther suit/legs done that way and it looks good. Probably would have to be careful in cutting off the right amount and cleaning up any glue residue off of the undersuit though. This method should surely give you much more frontal mobility for sitting, walking, etc. Just a thought.

Yeah you're right about that LC. I was thinking about the right place to make such a cut & whether it would be worth the risk of messing them up to do so. I was thinking of making a cut to make the cod piece (hip girdle) into a pair of briefs with the break occuring just above the hip joint. That, however, may mess up the lines of the muscles. It may be better to cut them along one of the striations to better hide or mask the cut. That would make them more like a "hi-rise" type of brief. I'm still not sure if I'm going to do this... Thoughts????

I'm still trying to piece together who makes what & all that jazz. I've been on the BOTB for about a year now & I'm still getting corrected on this all the time. I can usually recognize pieces from Davidyr1, Janty, and Artsee, but that's about it. I know there are others who make stuff. I've picked up my pieces from second and third owners who sometimes can't tell me who made what I have. I guess it doesn't really matter, but when it comes to stuff like this the maker can sometimes tell you how he/she overcomes these types of problems, if there is even a solution.
