Cape Rods - How To & Materials
Now my costume's almost ready, I've been thinking about the spread out cape effect. I can't find any other links to this topic. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fit, what to use etc. Do rods in the bottom end of the capes restrict motion? Your thoughts please :batman

Re: Cape rods: how to and why
its very simple. when sewing a seam just leave enough room to slide a rod into it at the bottom. once the seam is done, just cut a small slit into it to insert the rod. As far as restrictiveness (sp), not really. Im going for the extended "wing" effect myself with my new cape. It looks cool. lol.

Re: Cape rods: how to and why
I've used wooden dowel rods in the ends of my pleather cape for two years, and in my homemade vinyl one the year before that & have had nothing but great results. The bat suit is an impressive piece of work and people always ooh and ahh over it, but the greatest reactions I get are when I spread that huge cape out. People go nuts and everyone wants pictures when you do that.

Re: Cape rods: how to and why
In the cape I got from Joe, he used fiberglass rods which work very well and are very lightweight.

Re: Cape rods: how to and why
I remember Brin saying something about the rods being fiberglass, like the ones used for bicycle flags. I think thats a good idea, if you notice in the 89 movie at the beging when Bats was confronting the thugs on the roof top. When he spred open that cape, the dowels slightly bend downward. I like that effect. Just my 2 cent. :signal

Bat23...great memory.:wink
I usually get fibreglass bicycle flags at Walmart or TRU.
Inexpensive, and you can sometimes get several rod lengths from one flag.

Re: Cape rods: how to and why
Another source for the fiberglass rods is Home depot or other hardware or home improvement stores. They usually carry a couple of different lengths in orange. They are much stronger than dowels & not vety expensive. Around here they are used to stick in the ground to help snowplow drivers see where the curbs are when they are covered with snow. (man I hate winter!)

Re: Cape rods: how to and why
I just used 2 halves of a model rocket launch rod, and they worked perfectly. :)

Re: Cape rods: how to and why
This place sells carbon fibre rods for models etc. they can supply 2 metre lengths if you ask nicely bot the thicker ones come pre-cut to 1 metre.

Unless you have a shed full of old sea fishing rods, which are also good.

Re: Cape rods: how to and why
I've also got some hollow fibreglass rods I think came from some kind of curtain rod or something.
They would be good for a cape rod/blowgun kinda thing.
Hey...How about actually using a blowgun in the rod pocket? Hmmm...
