Repairing a Vinyl Cowl
:batman
I have one of those returns commemorative cowls that is starting to tear on the top of the slit. I know this happens a lot. Any advice on a repair? I took it to a shoe repair shop and had them sew a border before the rip so it won't tear any further, but the stiching is now tearing the rubber. I had someone mention that they took an iron and re-melted the rubber? Any ideas/advice?

Re: Cowl repairs
First tape the tear together with masking tape on the outside then use liquid electrical tape available at any hardware store to seal it fron the inside. The liquid electrical tape is basically liquid vinyl and the mask is vinyl (PVC, I think that's poly vinyl chloride but I'm not sure). Allow it to fully dry before removing the tape. Should work. I've also used vinyl repair kits but that requires the use of an iron.

Ed
Thanks for the advice. I'll look for the liquid at the hardware store. I'm new at this kind of stuff so i'm always looking for insight from the Batvets!

Re: Cowl repairs
I used a vinyl repair kit to fix a rip in a child size vinyl cowl... However, I'm not real happy with the results. It's holding fine, but I'm not happy with the looks of it. Maybe if I can find out what to use to paint it... Anyway, sounds like the liquid electrical tape may work a little better & be a little easier to use...
What I did was use the backing cloth that came with the repair kit & used the kit's vinyl glue & glued a really large piece inside the cowl to reinforce the top of the slit & the rest of the back of the head piece. I used one of my son's small basketballs to retain the shape while it dried. Once that was dry, I used the vinyl glue again to fill in any visible cracks. Then, apply the vinyl color and iron as directed. You do have to be careful with the iron so as not to totally destroy your cowl.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I'm glad this isn't my main cowl. I guess there are a few different ways to do this.
