Emblem Painting Problem

 :cussing :cussing :cussing :cussing

Man, I am so TICKED right now! I tried painting my Returns emblem using the clay out masking method & it totally looks like ASS! And not a nice one either...

 :banghead :banghead :banghead

I fear that I've completely ruined my emblem. I stripped all the old paint off, painted it yellow, used some soft non-drying clay & worked my butt off getting a clean edge, painted the black & now when I try to take the clay out, it's pulling up some of the yellow AND some of the black is coming with it! Everything was fine until I put that DAMNED clay in there...

Hours of work wasted! I think I may just try to get a finished one & throw this piece of crap away! Anyone have a Returns emblem they want to get rid of?????????

 :cussing :cussing :cussing :cussing

Sorry guys, I'm REALLY frustrated, as this is my second go around with this emblem.

Ha !
Welcome to my world !! :rollin
I did exactly the same thing with my Panther emblem, looks like something I once did in PlaySchool (Kindergarten!)...
I blame the paint .. it just settled sooo thick. I used Car spray paint. The Black worked fine, that looks good, nice and even etc etc , but the yellow..!! I coulda puked on it and it would have looked better.
I have kept it as an example to remind me that I am rubbish at most everything I try, but at least I try!!

I don't know how these guys do this & get the awesome results they get. I used EXACTLY what the others used. I used the Krylon Fusion paint the first time, but I didn't like it. It looked really bad. Maybe I didn't let it dry long enough between coats. I ended up getting some plastic enamel that is wonderful. The problem could've been the clay... I don't know. I'm just still fuming over here!

I had the same problem as you. The paint went in way too thick around the edges & boud to the clay and the resin. When I tried to pull the clay up, everything came with it.

First thing is, did you use primer? I always primer everything first, which I don't think was explained when someone posted this method I came up with. With Krylon fusion, normally you don't need to use primer, but I always do for safety reasons. Second, you don't want to just soak the emblem with paint, you want to mist it on until it is a uniform color. Let it dry completely, if you look on the back of the can I believe it says that it fully dries in about 24-48 hours. Third, don't throw your emblem away. Get some acetone or paint thinner and fill it in a container that can completely hold your emblem and let it soak for a couple of hours, all of the paint will come off and then you can do it all over again....or you can just contact me and I'll make you an amazingly clean Returns emblem. :wink

You might try using a clear coat from a auto paint supply store that is made for plastics to seal the yellow. Make sure you let that yellow dry totally than put the clay in and shoot the black. When painters do pin stripes they have to pull the tape at the right time or use a razor to cut the edge free. If they dont they will have the edge come up on them. It sounds like both the edge is coming up and the paint underneath is not dry or sealed.

Most guys who make them pour the plastic in the mold in stages so that no paint is needed, paint the mold than pour the urethane, or have all the parts seperated and can paint each part seperate so dont be discouraged just give it another try.

Re: BAT EMBLEM PAINTING = FAILURE!!!

Well, first of all, I'll answer the questions.

Yes, I shook the can very well. I timed it for two minutes exactly, as I didn't want any kind of snag.

No, I didn't use primer on it. I didn't think I needed to, as the directions said it wasn't necessary. I let each coat of yellow dry for two days, & it sat for a week after the final coat was done. The black sat for two days after it was sprayed. I used EZ clay, which is a non-hardening clay - I think it might even be TOO soft...

The clear coat idea for sealing the yellow is a good one. I'll probably try that next time.

Don't worry, I'm not throwing it away. I just needed to cool off a little. Heck I threaten to throw my computer to the curb at least once a day, & it's still sitting here. I am, however, exploring getting a new emblem until I think I can face this thing again. I get frustrated, but I ultimately don't give up. I may complain & sound like I will, but I never do. I just make a lot of noise sometimes. My wife hates that about me - I give this gloom & doom type of vibe about some things & then end up coming out on top.

John - If I still haven't tackled it by then, I'll send it to you. Thanks for that bro. I'll be in touch...

Just put the pigment in the the emblem resin when you cast them. Done.

They aren't worth fooling with any other way less you got more time then you should.
