It would already be curved & pretty hard plastic. I have some large green cups that would be perfect. All you would have to do is make a template out of paper, trace it onto the cup face, cut it out & cut the grooves, dremel or sand the corners smooth & paint. Voila, pretty cheap forearm guards. I'm gonna try this method sometime soon... However, I've been really pleased with my metal ones. I have a template that I posted somewhere here and at the LOH (in the costuming tutorials) of the measurements I use for the armor pieces. I took them from a resin prop that one of the bros here sent me.nondisclosed_email@example.com (KnightStix)Thu, 25 Nov 2004 09:53:47 +0000 Re: Here's my idea for gloveshttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1798060,from=rss#post1798060https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1798060,from=rss#post1798060I've thought about that a few times too. I've got an old Teflon type cutting board that I just don't use. Actually the wooden one You see in some of the pictures is our cutting board of choice. I've thought of cutting it to size and then sanding a curve to it on the top and bottom, to give it shape and so it wraps the forearm better. It'll certainly be lighter than metal. nondisclosed_email@example.com (EchoSix)Thu, 25 Nov 2004 08:12:51 +0000 Re: Here's my idea for gloveshttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1798059,from=rss#post1798059https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1798059,from=rss#post1798059I was thinking of using some type of composite or somewhat hard rubber for arm guards. I make forearm armor out of 26 ga. sheet metal & it works very well. Still pretty easy to work with & gives a pretty stiff, realistic feel. Again, I wouldn't try any bullet deflecting ala Wonder Woman with them... I think they'd be fairly effective against a strike or blunt object. There would definitely be battle damage though... I may try to make a set out of like 18 ga. or heavier sheet metal reinforced with epoxy kevlar. I wish I had thought to attach the fins (I have the same ones you do) that way when I modified my licensed gloves. What I did was use the dremel with a cutting disc to cut about an 1/8" groove around the base of each fin to allow a valley for the leather to sit in when it was pressed all the way down to the base. This gives the illusion that they're attached from the outside when they're really just sticking through & glued from the inside. Mine look good, but I like the results you got a lot better - much cleaner looking. I may go back (after Halloween of course) & redo mine the way you did. For the armor plates, I used sheet metal & craft foamies. Good stuff bro! Keep it up! :up Oh, and you're right about the dust from the resin. Everyone (this is for the newbies), make SURE you wear a dust mask when grinding, cutting, or sanding resin! That stuff goes everywhere!nondisclosed_email@example.com (KnightStix)Sun, 10 Oct 2004 08:29:46 +0000 Re: Here's my idea for gloveshttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1798038,from=rss#post1798038https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1798038,from=rss#post1798038Okay... Here's a shot of the inserts screwed into place. Only two fins show the brass inserts, while the others show the screw that goes into them.... I didn't have to tap threads into the resin. I gave it a shot, in hopes that the threads wouldn't apply too much pressure and crack the fins, but the threads cut their way in just fine. Do notice however, the one brass insert at the bottom, where one edge broke away while screwing it in with the screwdriver. I'm glad I decided to get a couple extra. If you've never used these things before... it's essentially a hollow screw, with "wood" threads on the outside and "machine" threads on the inside. You drill a hole the diameter of the insert itself and use a screwdriver to screw them into the hole. The screwdriver sets into a slot at one end of the insert, as you can see at the bottom of the picture. You just have to make sure the screw threads match the threads on the inside of the insert. I also got a few sets of madison screws with the intention of only using the screw that would thread into the brass insert, because of their very thin screw head. That way, there's no need to tape over a larger bolt or screw head that may rub into your arm or sleeve of the bodysuit. I could have used the shaft part (the silver tube looking thing) but that would have meant epoxying the thing into the fins. The brass inserts eliminate that step. They aren't going ANYWHERE. So with that step done fairly easily, I chose to use the plastic wall of a clear plastic container that held Zip-Ties as a flat, rigid yet flexible base for the inside of the glove. I just used scissors to cut two of them to length, laid out three evenly spaced spots for the fins and drilled holes for the screws to pass through. I also had to drill holes through the leather gloves. I put a piece of wood inside the glove so that the drill bit would hit that, making sure I only drilled through the one side of the glove. Here's a shot of the inside of the glove showing the plastic strip being squeezed between the screws and the inside wall of the glove, as the screws go through the hole in both the plastic and the glove and then finally are screwed into the fins on the outside of the glove... Here's a shot of the outside, with all three fins attached. Janty, I did take your advice about the possibility of the fins spinning on just one screw... but instead of setting two inserts per fin, I put a small drop of epoxy between the fins and the leather. One drop infront and one in back and then I screwed the fin down tight. This shows the drop of epoxy before I screwed the middle fin down fully. A small amount of epoxy oozed out, but I cleaned that up with spirits, before the epoxy set. Now... looking at these photos, I'm thinking, "Wow. Everything looks filthy and all scratched up." But that's just dust from my hands. Everything's all cleaned up now, without scratches or discolorations in the fins. So here's the final shot showing the alignment of the fins... It's actually easy to do, just a little nervracking because I've never tried it before and I've only got one shot. I'll take the gloves down the road to a tailor and ask her to bring in the gauntlet area, so it's tighter on my arm. Maybe after Halloween, I'll fabricate the forearm plates and stick those on. I'm cool with the way they look until next year. Too much to do right now.nondisclosed_email@example.com (EchoSix)Sat, 09 Oct 2004 22:17:53 +0000 Re: Here's my idea for gloveshttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1798037,from=rss#post1798037https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p1798037,from=rss#post1798037damn, i wish i was going to see the leaves! Yeah... A belt sander helped with cleaning up the bottom of the fins, but I used a combination of the table saw and my compound miter saw to get rid of the bulk of the base area. I couldn't imagine using just the sander to grind through all of it. The dust from the resin is pretty brutal. I didn't want to explain that too much originally, because most people don't have the bigger tools. If you're gonig to use a belt sander to clean up and round off the base... I recommend a 100 grit belt. Anything more course than that will grind away too much, too fast. Until you colored those words, Mattman, I never would have seen that option up there. Very cool... a new toy to use. I'll post picture of the fins later. I can't show you the suit yet, because I don't have anything from the Main Man yet. Yet... From California. From you know who... But when they do arrive... WHEN! they do... I'll certainly put up some pictures.  nondisclosed_email@example.com (EchoSix)Sat, 09 Oct 2004 06:00:58 +0000
