How To Make Gauntlets
What is the best way to create Begins style gauntlets for a guy with NO metal work experience and no latex, plasti-dip, scultping, etc, etc experience.
I am eager to learn and also wish to do it as cheaply as possible. Where should I start? Plasti-dip sounds an interesting concept to me and as I understand it, it basically enables any object to be enveloped in a smooth black covering, right?
So I am guessing that whatever I do it culminates in plasti-dip which is fairly straight forward, right?
So prior to doing that, what does anyone recommend? Getting modelling clay? What should I use to wrap around my arm?
Like I say, I am a compelte novice to all of this so please forgive my utter ignorance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Just remember for this stuff:
1)No experience
2)No budget

I am by no means an expert,but I've tossed this around in my head.
I'm thinking of getting some mold making type stuff that allows you to recreat body parts. I've seen it in the past and it's fairly cheap and is a kit for making one-off molds and casting in plaster.
For example,you get a container that's long and thin. Mix up the mold compound and pour it in the container,then put in your whole forearm up to your elbow. In something like ten minutes or so you gently remove your arm and have a mold. Then you pour in plaster(or whatever) and when that cures you peel away the mold leaving an exact duplicate of you arm.
Then you get some clay and sculpt away. After that mold it and cast it in latex(or whatever).
This mold stuff used to be readily available at Michaels and A.C. Moore,but I haven't been able to find it since I took an interest in it...go figure.
Oh,BTW,Plasti-Dip is basically just rubber spray paint. Comes in a spray can and you get it at Lowe's,NAPA parts stores and a few other places. Nothing to it. If you can use spray paint,you can use PD because that's all it is really. Slightly different consistency and takes a little getting used to,but there's nothing to it.

Alternativly are there otherways of building it and then I just plastic-dip the whole thing?

Could these spikes somehow be modified to hold fins?
This one is cheap - only $30 for a pair
I am thinking maybe get one of these leather bracers and modify it. Could I attach fins and then plastic dip the whole thing? Would that make it look metallic - if something is plasti-dipped is it still flexible? Whats a good way to make sturdy fins myself?
Maybe I could even use real metal armoor if there is any design which looks close.

Well see,that's the problem. The places I've seen it haven't had it for a while. But that doesn't necessarily mean they don't carry it anymore so I'll have to look into it.
I seriously doubt you'd find anything like this in a hardware store,though. As suggested,check a good hobby/craft shop. The kit might actually be called 'Body Parts'...for some reason that sticks in my head.

ONE WORD! Alginate... Something with a longer set time than the dental stuff... it's pretty common to find it at most highend art stores, or order it directly from smooth-on.com... their brand is called Alga-safe... and after having HUGE problems with another brand Mold-gel... Alga-safe was the shizzle LOL...
hope that helps...
You could also use a mannequin arm like I did for my gauntlet sculpt....

my advice to you would be to stop seeing everyday objects as what they were intended to be used for.
All around you are pieces of wood, plastic, cardboard, metal etc etc which if you look at from a different angle could easily be something else much more useful to batman. Break what you want to make down into simple geometry (spheres, cones, boxes and the like) and then start finding things to glue together that look right
want to sculpt and cast? Do yourself a favor and google it. Go to michaels and buy water based clay which is cheaper than plasteline and start practicing making simple shapes and then mold them. You dont have to spend a lot of money to screw up.
start at the beginning, dont try and sculpt and mold until you have at least looked how to do it under a few web pages if thats your path.
