Well Brin (and others), hope you enjoy more pics. It's basically ALL pics, so dialup people will hate me, sorry but for now just getting pics up, I'll redo the pages to be faster for dialup once it's done.

]BTAS grap gun page 4

got the right handle piece mold done, that's 1/3 of the whole gun. Actually have some clear casting epoxy in it now. I'm using that so I can make a clear version for myself to display at conventions.

I'm really loving this project Tom thanks for the updates, I've gotta get me one of these babies!

Anyway I saw something on the new last night which got me thinking…How about converting the grappling gun into a taser gun. The housing for the grappling hook could house multiple taser cartridges. On the news the footage showed them just snapping a small square cartridge to the front on the gun. I was thinking if they’re small enough maybe you could install four of them in the housing and rig it up to shoot them in sequence. Once done just remove the housing and snap on a new cartridge with four more and you’re ready to go.

Really?

"we the people" were allowed to own them last time I looked at some catalog. I don't see why this would be any different. The design would lend itself rather well, just make the barrel snap on and off instead of screwing together.

I opened up the mold and besides some small airbubbles in the casting it's really pretty. I'll have to heat the epoxy a little, supposed to be self degassing but it was cold. Can't wait to get the thing done so I can shut up about it. Going to prep and do both of the remaining parts together so its done soon. I'll get pics.

ok all you home-brewers and molders. This barrel is bugging me, I'm sure I'm making this too complicated, but maybe it's the fumes from the fiberglass...

does this look like the easiest way to mold the barrel, I need another opinion before I waste more time and materials. I really want to get this thing done ASAP and this is the last piece I have to mold, been saving it for last since I didn't have a good game plan.

sorry about the size of it]barrel mold plan

Anyone catching anything wrong there? I'm not, I don't think. Any easier way besides doing a one piece mold and cutting it?

since I'm here, more pics of the mold here]page 5

really want to get this done this weekend before I get sidetracked again with something else that pays.

Hey Tom, with such a wonderfully innovative project -- and if done ASAP -- I think it's practically inevitable this will be the experimental prototype of more versions to come. I've so far had three BK belt models, and there could still be more. If you want to finish it fast, my suggestion is go ahead with what now feels right. There will be time in the future to re-think/redesign/re-fashion, and that's par for the process. Remember the best Spitfire was Model 9 (out of 14)?

Thanks Zane. After this --Log in or sign up to see linked image content--
I'm REALLY bummed out. Somehow the damn silicone managed to break the vacuum and seep past the edge of the master onto the first pour of silicone and bond to it. It's mostly on the back of the handle, but just totally ticked off about this right now.

Anyway, 2/3 of the way done now with this half of the handle wrapped up I can move onto the barrel.

Have to go to court tomorrow for a parking ticket my car got when it was in the shop tomorrow and fight "the man" and now this happens. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I think I'll just make a "cover plate" like a textured grip sleeve to cover this up until I feel like remolding this piece. Unless of course someone has an idea to cleanly remove that silicone.

Re: BTAS grappling hook gun..anyone want a mold?

I had a similar experience happen to me recently on a dagger mold i did. Rather than trash the mold I am using it till it burns out and just sanding the ridge clean on the casting. Lots more work than a piece requires if the mold worked out right, but better than wasting the time and materials. However if someone here were to buy the mold from you it might be worth recouping the materials cost so a new mold can be tried again.

Re: BTAS grappling hook gun..anyone want a mold?

Yeah, had the same thing happen on a knife, they're usually much easier molds to make, so I don't sweat those too much, I know my buddies will always be up for a slightly "off" mold. This is just a bunch of material and money.

Been thinking about it all night, still not sure what I'm going to do with it. It'd be one thing if I had a ridge, that'd be no problem to fix, this will be a nice big ugly dent over the length of the back of the handle, as well as a spot or two on the front, all of which will be under the hand on film, so I can live with that, but for any other use, ugh, just hideous. Maybe I'll cast one, open the mold and keeping the casting stuck on the "plug" side, remove the outer portion of the mold, then just try a case mold approach to pouring a new silicone piece. Of course, that would require a bit of sanding/patching to be done without having the same thing happening again.

 emoticon

I wonder if brushing some solvent onto the overlap area will soften the second pour enough to sand it away or something like that.

Well, in any case, the barrel's got to wait until after court and a birthday party later.

Wish me luck.

Yeah Tom, quite a plate you've got right now. Since failures usually outnumber successes at first, and since there're sure to be more refinements, why not model-putty and sand over the dented and blemished spots? Then paint. You'd still likely have something decent enough, so go ahead and drop it for now and enjoy the party.

almost the last update, really.

barrel's 3/4 done. Hook and spool are the last two tiny things remaining to be molded, and they're going to be one piece block molds. If I don't have to work tonight, the mold will be DONE by 5 am EST tomorrow (5/5/[sign in to see URL] the world going to end?)

I'll cast one up, get a hook done, shoot some more pics and video of the thing in action, then go back and finish all the detail work like painting.

Email me if you want info on getting one. tom AT clevelandfx DOT com

well, silicone wasn't fully cured yet, so mold's not done, so I patched up the hook and cast the handle.

The "seepage" isn't that big a deal, little bit of cleanup and it'll be OK, so not selling the mold after all.

The casting isn't that bad at all, ten minutes with some bondo and sandpaper and it will be glass smooth again. No one will be the wiser once its cleaned and painted.

thanks. funny you should mention [sign in to see URL] was actually laying it out in emachineshop's free software ]check it out here and looking into getting them injection molded. It's not going to happen, but would be awesome. I'll post the files up on the site for anyone who wants to take a look for themselves when I get them done.

I think the begins gun in terms of pneumatics might be easier (depending on the size of it) I think some BB gun or paintball stuff might be modified to fit into a shell. The problem is I don't have a full machine shop or access to one. If you should happen to come across scale drawings or something like that I might entertain the idea.

new version of the hook's molded and I'm casting one now to shoot some video tests later today. The larger inner barrel and tube for the hook seems like it might be a good thing, I think it might shoot further and harder. That might help out with the "line drag". I ended up using 1/8 brass pipe for the inner barrel, a 4" piece cut off just below the threads on one end. maybe 3 1/2" long now.

The last piece that I'm trying to find/make today is the spool, off to the odd parts stores to see what they have.

I got the screws and put it together, waiting on the fixit paste (from aves) to cast one up for the movie with, should be super strong and much nicer to patch, bonds to itself like mad.

If it doesn't start raining here I'm shooting video tests this afternoon and will have them online tonight.

{EDIT}
So I was thinking, does anyone have contact info for the people involved with the series? I was thinking about sending one of these out to someone involved with it. Maybe Paul Dini.

{EDIT}

Tom
