Evilgenius Batarang Template Instructions & Diagrams

hey gang,
Here are some shots of the batarang I am building for Evilgenius to use in his film.
The pictures below represent one nights worth of work.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--
This first image shows the paper template made in order to make sure all of my measurements were to scale.
I then cut out my first layer of sheet styrene.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--
More layers of styrene are added to create the insets and to prepare for the bevels.
Note that the paper template has been cut to use as a guide for the next layer of details.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--
At this stage I have added bevels to the top edge of the rang by using the flat edge of the exacto knife.
Care was taken to not over carve the edge and distort the curve of the top edge of the rang.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--
Here you see that I am using 2 part plumbers epoxy smoothed with Vicks VapoRub to creat the blade edge bevels. There is still a long way to go before this is finished. Tonight I will finish the blade edges and then a mold will be made in silicone in order to cast a second half and mate the two together to make a double sided batarang. Mrbats, if you could email me, i will need your help doing the hinge for the hero piece.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Gonna wet sand the surface and superclean all of the bevels, after that its mold time. If there is interest I will take pics of the molding process and share that as well.

The Vicks works great for helping smooth out the epoxy putty. It thins the putty a little and helps keep it from sticking to your fingers as you shape and smooth it.

I had no idea VapoRub could be used for that. I was noticing that the AquaMend epoxy putty I used was sticking to me a lot rather than my work. Nice tip!

That is outstanding. :wink
Before you mold it,cut it in half and I can show a way do a strong, silent, invisible [sign in to see URL] you'd like,of course.(you'd have to mold it in two separate halves,as opposed to one piece and cutting it later, but there's a good reason for it.)

Re: Batarang Build for Evilgenius progress pics

Getting the piece ready to mold took longer than anticipated as I spent more time cleaning it up so it looked its best. I am going to mold the piece as an open backed silicone mold so it will essentially be only the front half with detail. Once that is done I am going to take two castings and mate them back to back to make one solid double sided hero casting. having the open back mold will allow me to make several other half castings which I can chop up and rework into a folding version. Once this is done I will post pics and would appreciate any and all sugestions for hinging the casting halves.
