Latex can shrink anywhere from 10-20% (I believe those are the numbers). He needs to have around 1/2 inch on top of whatever he's sculpting on. There are Bros who are waaayyyy better than me on this. Hopefully, they will chime in.

Latex can shrink anywhere from 3% to 20% it's overall cast form...that's quite a huge margin when you think about it.

Something I've started doing to counter this is use way oversized busts to sculpt on. In other words, I use a base that is approx 26 inches around the noggin. Way oversized and then I add at least a full inch of clay onto the bust...even more when doing Cowls.

That is what I did with my Darkness, Year 1 cowl, Kane cowl and DK Returns sculpt.

With the exception of the DK Returns cowl which still needs to be molded..the other 3 fit like a charm and are all cast in latex.

In doing so you are basically sculpting a much larger head form than normal 1:1 scale but when you're pulled it from the mold...and over the next 3 days the moisture evaporates from your cured latex...and subsequently shrinks...you will have a good sized/wearable cowl because all the steps taken before hand have allowed for this piece to shrink down to approx 23/24 inches around.

This is what I do...and works great for what I need. Hope this helps somewhat.

that is aweomse info there guys, and a great question to start off with! as many of you know, I have been planning to get started on a cowl for some time. possibly even a full suit sometime. this is what I feel has been missing from the BOTB for quite a while, USEFUL INFO emoticon

and when I get started, pics will NOT be posted here due to reasons of a personal nature, but I will be more than happy to send progress pics via email to whoever asks. and will also offer help to those I can. of course when i start on it, I'll let you know.
