How To Make Duct Tape Armature

I have an '89 bib and am thinking of sculpting some bicep and shoulder armour, only problem is I dont have anything to sculpt off, so I would have to do it flat.

Can anyone advise me of the best way to do this? I can't really work out how a muscle would look if it were flat. Or should I try something different?

I was thinking of maybe sculpting onto a bottle or something like that?

Re: Seperate Bicep Armour

You could always make a "duct tape dummy" of your arms so you could get the armor to be a perfect fit for you.

Basically, what you do is wrap your arms from wrist to shoulder (one at a time of course) in Saran Wrap, then "mummify" the arm in duct tape or masking tape. I guess in your case, you could even do elbow to shoulder...

Be sure to draw a line with a marker down the outside once you get the tape wrapped on & then put some cross marks every few inches apart to use as register marks to help line it up after you cut it off your arm.

You'll use the marker line as a guide for your cut (be careful with this part so you don't scar yourself up) & then you'll line the little cross/register marks up, & tape it back together.

After you get it spliced back together, get some newspaper, batting, paper bags, foam, etc., & stuff the "dummy" until it looks like your arm. After you get the first one done, go back & do the same for the other arm. Now you'll have an armature of sorts on which you can sculpt your armor.

I made a pair just like this for myself the last time I was gluing armor to an undersuit. I had a torso mannequin already that worked well for the chest & ab portion, but it had no arms. So... this was the quick, dirty, and cheap way to glue down the arm portion of the armor so that I didn't have to inhale DAP fumes for several hours while it cured. Worked great for me...

Hope this helps. It'll at least get you something more dynamic than a flat surface or a bottle so that it will fit you perfectly.

Hey that sounds like a pretty cool method. I was actually in the process of working something like that out for forearms, but wasn't sure if it would work. Thanks to this thread I can rest assured. I too tried the bottle approach, and found it top be more of a hassle than it was worth. Thanks KnightStix
