'89 Cape Features

I've been looking into what features I want from a a fairly accurate 89 cape.

Here are some of the interesting things I've noticed and have questions about-

WOOL INNER CAPE PANELS

So far I have yet to see pics of a screen used 89 cape with latex on both sides of all the panels. I know there were all kinds of capes made for different purposes but is this feature true for all/most of the main 89 capes?

It appears they simply "leathered" the first two panels on either side that would be most visible and would be flipped over the shoulder as seen throughout the film and in photos.

I think this may have been done for a couple reasons. The raw wool wouldn't be as prone to sticking to the costume and would slide around more elegantly. It would also help keep the weight down. And from a visual standpoint, the duller finish would also make the shiny legs and chest and pop forward against the matte finish of the inner cape.

I'll look through some more screen caps and such but I think this may have the situation for the majority of the costume setups in the flick.

BONEY CAPE SEAMS-

Another feature I've been curious about is the possiblity of placing the fiberglass rods in all/most of the panel ridges/seams in the cape.

Not only do I think it would look cool like in this studio pic, but I think such a cape setup may have been used in the film a few times. The one that comes to mind in particular is when Bats and Vicki are running down the alleyway and the cape is splayed out out in a very stiff bat like fashion. Also the First appearance of Batman in Axis seems to have the "boney" cape effect going on.

Image

Hmmm... Y'know it seems that this studio pic has the cape bones in there as well.

I think I got it figured out! If you look at the pic where the cape is laid out on the floor you can see the "tubes" running down the seam areas.
Image

I was wondering why they left so much fabric along those seams. It almost looked like pleats or sloppy workmanship (which wouldn't make sense).

And even the first pic in the post-

Looks to have the "bones" in there as well. Look how that one seam laying againt his back leg. That couldn't happen without rods in there!

It seems I just answered my own question!

I love when that happens.

I dont think Ive ever seen pic where more than just the first inside panels have been latexed. I always assumed it was to keep the cape from becoming too heavy and stiff and allowed more flow.

The rod thing between the panels is always something Ive wondered about for certain shots. We know there was a rig for the first panel for the extension scenes, but I dont know if anything was ever revealed about the rest of the panels.

Re: 89 Cape Features

although there were many different capes constructed for the movie, I remeber reading that the prototype cape that would eventually become the template for all the others wasn't sewn...in the pic of the cape lying on the floor, you asked why they left so much material along the seams, and the answer is that when they constructed it they cut each panel and had it sprayed with rubbe rna rolled out with paint rollers...then they they butted the edges of the fabric together after spraying each panel with rubber and then sprayed it with another coat and layed a piece of silk gauze along the seam to reinforce it, the gauze would lay right into the wet rubber and blend in perfectly....I have an SUPER RARE 89 Documentary other than the Making of a Hero that also says that once they had the prototype cape made like the one decribed above.... they then molded it in silicone and would just spray the rubber into the mold and then lay the fabric on top of it..this would prevent them from having to sew anything and all the capes would ahve the same print texture making them all have the same look

here's a shot of the seam of the 89 cape

Interesting stuff. I remember reading about that basic methodology in an older thread. I'll draw up some diagrams later of what I think we are seeing in some of these pics. There a few weird artifacts that could be explained with a "no sew" construction.

In the meantime, Here's a few pics of a guy spraying down cape panels with latex on a specially built table. You can see how he is standing in the missing piece of the "pie".

Like most of the weird making of caps I'm posting today, it's from the 89 UK Doc.

not only that we're still obsessed, but that we're still finding out new stuff about it.
