Foamies Mask - Pics

The other day I decided to see if I could create a Neal Adams style batman mask out of 2D materials. All I had around was some construction paper so that's what I used. :lol

Anyway it got me thinking, do you guys think this same thing could be done using foamies? Not the entire thing, just the face portion.

The idea would be to then cover the foamie mask with a shiny cloth and use this cloth to comprise the rest of the mask, maybe supporting the foamies from behind the eyebrows with crayola model magic or something?

This might make a decent budget mask. LMK what you guys think, ideas etc.

I think I remember seeing someone vacuforming foamies on the LOH, though my brain might have made this up just now.

If that's true you might be able to use heat to mold them? I've never worked with foamies so I won't know, but I take it they're cheap and it's worth a shot!

Sounds like a cool idea. I always like to see what bros are coming up with as far as cloth masks/cowls are concerned.

yeah, you CAN vacuform foamies. I'd find the thickest you could find for it.

I did some ears as a test with my crappy vacuformer and a heatgun...and it worked well, but they tend to want to distort.

I'd stay away from the model magic. Too fragile from what I've heard...was talking to someone who was at SDCC and saw a cool witchblade, but she complained about it breaking constantly.

I'd guess if you had a wrinkly cowl it might stay in shape a little bit better as it would have more different planes that wouldn't want to bend as easily.

For the ear and some feathers I was using the 1/8"ish thick sheets. For a cowl I'd suggest trying to find 1/4" thick, or 6mm I think. You'll lose a little detail, but it's one of those trade offs you sometimes have to make.

I've seen some costume sites that have used foamies to make armor suggest using glue to stiffen it...don't think that'd work here.

Worth a try since they're so cheap. :)

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I don't have a vaccuform table so thats out. I thought I read somewhere you could shape Foamies though using a hair dryer or a stove top, is this correct?

possibly, haven't tried the hair dryer.

You CAN build a small vacuformer pretty easily.Image

It's a couple cookie sheets, some pop rivets, a pipe flange, some silicone sealant. The frame is window screen frame material, and to hold the two halves together you use those big paper clamp thingys. I have info on it/instructions on how to build it someplace around here. It was out of a modeling magazine from years ago. All you'd need would be a vacuum with a hose, shop vac preferred, and just heat the foamies in your oven.

interested email me and I'll dig up the plans for ya.

Re: Foamies mask? update

I finished my foamies mask. I can see out of it surprisingly well. Thanks for the vaccuform blueprints, I have some things I can use that for later but for this faceplate I just used a stovetop. I'm going to use the hero hood design over at lOH with some padding around the neck. i'm still figuring out how to cover this thing with my satin, I'll let you know when I work it out.
