Lets noodle with this..... how thick is the material???? gotta be on the large side of .250"???

How about these...

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D44

throw 3 or 4 in a row, on both sides of the closure (sunk) and your set.

They look great BTW.. (gaunts) I would go Matt, if it were me.

Ooh... I have access to that kinda thing at work.

I may have to pick some up and experiment with them.

I'm just afraid that with any padding, big wrists, etc, those magnets wouldnt hold.

I think it's been tried before actually, and for some reason in every case they went with another option.

What we need is someone to come up with a really clever sliding catch type mechanism.
But don't look at me I'm just saying is all emoticon

its worth a shot I think. those magnets have 4lb pull force.. thats with one magnet, on "the fridge"... put two together and they attract each other. Add a few and youd be surprised how tough they are.

Because of the fact that they would be sunk into the gauntlet, there is no chance of "breaking" them apart. So it would be a strait pull to separate them. I know from the last belt i built, a strait pull on 3- 13lb magnet pairs was quite a pull to separate them... difficult.

If you can see what im trying to explain.

That's what I meant with the hinge-pin mechanism. Sure, its an extra piece but I think it'll work.

I'm gonna give those magnets a shot too.

Patrick,

I think they look great. You did a much better job than Emersion did. The ones I had from him were just pathetic.

If you go the hidden door/hinge route, use a jewelers saw. That way it won't be a huge noticeable gappin cut.

I wouldn't do magnets though. For those of us who will have magnets on our belts, it might be a bad combo.

I thought you were going to do these in a urethane so that all you had to do was make a slit and they'd be flexible enough to squeeze your hand through?

Oh, and do a matte finish like they have in the movie. Nothing shiny. Just my two cents. :wink

Rubber... plastic... I'm doin both. :wink

I was originally thinking of using a dremel cutting wheel. That'll probably leave a gaping cut. But I'm wondering how easy it would be to cut a straight line with a jeweler's saw.

I think this hingepin idea will be the best way, personally. But... I'm tryin both out.

yeah it felt like they were shinier than the rest of the suit, that's why i said semi-gloss. And about the magnets, sure its a good idea, but once they're stuck together, and you try to take them apart, isn't there a risk that one will just detach from where its intended to be, remaining stuck to the other magnet? maybe I'm just not visualizing this well...
