In the movie and promo pics did they not look more shiney than matte? :huh

May have been the ribs were shiney and the rest matte...

These look spectacular, btw.

yeah it felt like they were shinier than the rest of the suit, that's why i said semi-gloss. And about the magnets, sure its a good idea, but once they're stuck together, and you try to take them apart, isn't there a risk that one will just detach from where its intended to be, remaining stuck to the other magnet? maybe I'm just not visualizing this well...

I've had that trouble with them, when i made my Begins grappler I attached the cartridge with magnets in 2 areas, one of which came undone. And it was glued in real well, with epoxy.

I suppose thats a possible problem with anything like this. (magnets detaching)

But, with what i had in mind, sinking them into the material.. I would drill it with a tight tolerance for this and some good glue. I dont think they would come apart. Its only 4 lb pull force.

Food for thought.

The fewer moving parts the better, as far as I'm concerned (from a wearing the costume perspective).

That is why I will be going with rubber with a slit when Patrick makes me a pair....just like in the movie. :wink

I'm getting a wee bit lost on this magnet fastening idea chaps!!

Are we still talking about a hinged door with magnet fasteners?

If so, then i think that the sunken idea of yours Keith would be fine as we are talking about the magnets SLIDING apart aren't we??
A 'shear' force is very different to a 'pull' force, which MAY pull a magnet free eventually.

There again there is always the possibility that this old Brit's mind is totally misunderstanding the concern!

Patrick Sir,

I have very skinny wrists & I wonder if you could tell me what the diameter of your gauntlet is at that point please?
I know i can pad them out if need be but if the gap is too great it does not look very good.
Oh, and as far as the finish goes, i am going to vote for a semi-gloss/Satin finish. I feel they need to stand out from the suit as metal a wee bit but not a total contrast?

Thank you!

Cheers! :cheers

Mako.

Hey Mako,

I have puny wrists too, and small hands in general. I tried to find a happy medium to fit as many people as possible, and I decided that the Emerson gauntlets, which I had some of and was using them to decide the dimensions of my gauntlets, was already at a happy medium.

There's a considerable gap when I wear them but I'm just gonna fix it with some padding and I'll be happy. I guess its just a matter of personal taste.

Here's a couple pics so you have an idea. I'm the one whose hand is in the picture and my wrists have a 6.5-7" circumference at the wristbone:

If there's a problem with that, I could give latex slush casting a go on these so we could get somewhat shrunken gaunts... resin and urethane would come first though cuz of the weather.

Oh and also they cover up enough of the forearm anyway, that they give the illusion of having Popeye's forearms. :lol

I'm gonna draw something up to illustrate my hingepin idea. But I really do think it's the best way, at least for resin gauntlets.

For rubber gauntlets I might use the magnets. I'm thinking the reason those magnets worked loose in my grap gun is because the materials I was gluing together with them wasn't forgiving considering the forces it the epoxy had to endure(if that makes sense). Gluing the magnets to rubber, however, I would think would be more durable because the rubber can flex.

And yes, we're talking about shear forces here, not head-on forces, when opening the gauntlets. And the shear movement would take less force than an straight apart movement... which has a pro and a con - less stress to work the epoxy or superglue lose, than with straight head-on force, BUT less strength to hold the gauntlet closed for those with bigger wrists.

BTW I actually think these gauntlets will fit even some of the biggest wristed guys with a little room to spare. But I'm happy with how they look on my puny wrists.

Oh... one last thing I forgot... On the movie suit there was another forearm armor piece underneath the gauntlet, taking up some of the space. Kinda similar to what PhantomBatman is doing for his Returns forearm armor.

Brother Patrick,

you are a "STAR" mate!

I just measured my wrists and they are 7" cirumf' at best!!
Awesome, sounds like they could have been made for me, if you know what i mean!?

Carry on Sir! Thanks, I'm all excited now, everything is always too big for me!!

Oh yeah, & i probably will need to look at getting forearm armour also as 'Popeye' is definitely not a word that springs to mind when looking at my arms!?
Lovely,smashing, super & great even!!

 :cheers Mako.
