My First Attempt at Sculpting - Pics
After admiring the works of others and dreaming of being able to create the works of art that they do I decided to have a go myself.
At school I failed art, so don't expect much from me. I'm just having a go and fully enjoying it. I decided to start off small and gradually work my way up ...if I can.
I'd better explain the reason for the attempted scultps below.
The first pics are of a belt I'm trying to create, but instead of Batman or any other well known superhero I'm kinda creating my own for a giggle at work.
At work we are undergoing placing different work practices and my supervisor's position has been re-named to "Utility Man". So for a giggle, after speaking with my work collegues, I decided to make him a utility belt with the company logo on the buckle and a Hero Mask. The belt as you can see is heavily inspired by the Begins Belt.
The other pics are my attempt of the Robin Mask, but without the trade mark R symbol. I may add our work's symbol onto the mask as well, but at the moment I prefer it without, to keep it generic kinda. But still keeping the feel of the Batman...
Anyways enough rambling, take a look and see what you think.
I tried to smooth out the clay as best I could (Chavant NSP Soft). I intend on casting the mask first in Fibreglass then sanding it down to try to get it smoother, since I can't seem to get it any smoother in clay form. Plus I'm a little worried I'll try to smooth to much and end up ruining it.

Re: My 1st Attempt at Sculpting
Very cool. Im new to sculpting myself... its a hoot. Have you tried skin so soft? It softens up the very outer layer of clay and you can really get it smooth with it. Im still learning so i dont have much else to say for smoothness.. actually, i would also like to know how to smooth better LOL.
Very cool though

Re: My 1st Attempt at Sculpting
Thanks Guys I plan on casting these sometime this week depending on when my supplies turn up.
Kbillan "skin so soft" ??? I tried to do a google search for it and all I got was a beauty product made by avon ? is that the product you where talking about?
I have tried using a soft flat artist brush dipped in white spirits to try to smooth the clay ..it works to some extent.

Re: My 1st Attempt at Sculpting
Believe it! Avon Skin So Soft... glorious stuff.
Not cream.. but oil like substance.. good ol Skin so soft.
To decribe what it does... it like melts the surface.. rub it in and it will smooth it out.. then evaporate...
I was most concerned with sealing the sculpt after, but no problems.. paint stuck to it like... uhmm.. paint..

Re: My 1st Attempt at Sculpting
are you saying you painted the clay to keep it from cracking?

Re: My 1st Attempt at Sculpting
No we paint the clay to seal it when making moulds as clay is very pourus ...dont think I spelled it correctly but you know what I mean.
You can get a proper clay sealant but paint works just as well and is easisly obtainable...I think its acrylic paint that we use.

Re: My 1st Attempt at Sculpting
Kbillan I'll have to get my hands on some of that skin so soft and give it a whirl on my next sculpt and see what happens I'm also planning on buying some books and dvd's to learn techniques.
Also I'm wanting to do a full face and body cast of myself ...for my head I'm going to use Body double but I'm unsure of the best material to cast it I want something light weight but tough. I'm also going to use the head cast to sit my cowls that I already own. Made by Artists that I enspire me greatly.
