BEGINS Cape Pattern Pics page 1, 2, 3, 4,5

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I finally drew out an illustrator vector image of my Begins cape pattern. I saw a few capes made this way, one was on batman unmasked but was much longer, and had alot more drag to it. I wanted to make a cape that had the shape of an open begins cape, when hes gliding, not the falling through the stair shot, because that was overly massive.

But the gliding cape isn't TOO oversized to make work. I don't mind having some slight drag, but I know too much will get annoying. This design would be just bit enough to look like an open flying cape, and should cover my feet some when standing, which is why I did want drag, because the standing poses with the long cape look awesome to me.

I like the look of this cape more because it looks like real batwings. The top point where the outer 2 pieces connect is where my hands will be holding the cape. I angled in the square section inward some insteed of straight down, which should make the cape look nice and tight when open and not have alot of fabric sag.

What do you guys think? This is how i saw the sections divided up from looking at lots of movie stills. I'm going to cad cut the cardboard pieces later at work, and use them as templates. Im going to do a small test for this on my toy figure at home tongiht to see how much drag ill get from this pattern.

I'd think you'd want a little more angle at the top of the cape to have it drape over your shoulders during those standing still posed shots. If you look at Ludakris' cape design there's considerably more fabric around the top of the cape which when standing static adds a good volume to the cape. But in the end the beauty of this hobby is doing what you think looks good. I'd say test it on your figure and if you like the way it drapes and looks then do it. I'm sure it will look great.

a i think if you did an 8 panel design on a 360 degree that it would be more accurate,
and would look like the gliding cape just that much more.

thanks guys. And yea i realized that earlier too, a bit more fabric will allow for almost full front coverage of my body for the draped pics I got a nice balance on the figure test. I realize i really cant have it both ways, it will probably end up barely touching the floor. Its hard to keep the proportions close for the Begins look, while making it long enough to cover your body. Dont mind having it slightly shorter in back with this cut, because it keeps you from catching your heals on the cape alot.

I like [sign in to see URL] lot! Would love to see you do it even if just a test on a figure.

How high would the more "squarish" panels be? I would be concerned about being able to find fabric tall enough.

A good friend held the screen used cape and if I remember correctly he said it wasn't made of pie shapes like past capes. It has all kinds of weird angles and pieces that are not symmetrical. Kinda like your pattern. ;)

well there is the test i did. The seem lines were computer done, and the rubber band on the figure is to hold its real cape inplace. I did this on one of the 6 inch TDK batmans out now. For a standing pose, its not a bad length, gives me the ankle clearance while the front would just about touch. I think overall scale would still need to be a bit bigger. The top of the cape id life more too, while still keeping the bottom about the same length. I want the tail point to be out and not dragging when i pose. I might pull out the middle piece of the wing some. I want my cape to cover the front of my feet just enough, but when i throw it back over my shoulders, its not going to drag on the ground anymore, since putting it back on the shoulders lifts it off the ground a bit.

My 4 watch stretch velvet is pretty wide, almost just enough to use that way, but ill still be cutting the pieces out from the length of the fabric. I think its going to look pretty awesome in the end. Even better, my mom saw me cutting the material earlier and she ended up saying shed sew it for me, meaning... BETTER cape lol. She used to sew alot of my costumes sinces shes great at it, but i stopped bugging her, because well... i used to ask alot :) But its been a while so shes cool with it, as long as i cut it all out and make it easy to understand.

Ultimately it's going to be what you are happy with. There have been lots of different patterns for the Begins costume, and they all seem to be suited well to the individual.

I'm interested to see how it lays over your shoulders.
