Helmet Cowl
Hi guys. I've had a great time lurking and living vicariously through the brothers here. I have neither the talent nor the spare time to really take up the craft you guys have perfected, but after watching TDK a couple of times recently, I'm feeling motivated to float a few ideas around and see if I can get a little project going.
That said... has anyone tried or had any luck cannibalizing/retrofitting an actual motorcycle helmet into a cowl?
I imagine it would be possible if you started with something like this...
Think it might be possible to build around it? Cause that would be pretty B.A.

Re: Cowl Idea
I'm not really sure how to go about it, kinda fishing for ideas.
Maybe put it on, create a bust and then sculpt around it? Then slide the latex/urethane/foam cowl around the helmet for a seamless look?
Maybe start with a different helmet, like a skid lid/skull cap deal and try the same thing?
I just think it would be neat if you could find a helmet that's not too too bulky to start with. Not sure about how the eyes and nose would come together.
I kinda figured someone here might have explored the possibility for a durable, comfortable custom cowl.

Re: Cowl Idea
I think it would be a cool concept to have a cowl that is a functional helmet. I have pondered this, but even if you find a real low profile helmet, it's still gonna be big as a cowl IMO. Furthermore, i think to create a bust with it on your head, it's not gonna be seamless, it's gonna look like your wearing a helmet still... Please correct me if I'm wrong, anyone. Just my thoughts.

Re: Cowl Idea
Hey Zmanz, thanks for digging up all that good stuff. That last folding helmet is really cool. I wonder if it would be possible to build some kind of fabric type cowl around it.
See, this is what I meant to do, just get ideas kicking around. I absolutely love all of the movie accurate stuff you guys do, it's amazing. What really gets me going though are the original concepts and suits I've seen.
Let's think about this folding helmet for a mintute. What a great idea. Set the folding element aside, and it's still a very low profile impact resistant helmet. It wouldn't catch a bullet, but it might stop a bat, or a knife. It would be interesting just to explore these capabilities as a thought experiment.
As for making a cowl out of it, has anyone had any luck with fabric cowls over a solid frame? I think I saw a thread about a leather cowl a while back that looked pretty good.
Seems to me the hard part would be getting the eye area right, what with how the front of most helmets protrudes out from the forehead a bit. Would cause a scoop back to the eye area or at least a very deep eye socket.

Re: Cowl Idea
why not just make a cool Batman themed helmet? It would look cool on the road.

Re: Cowl Idea
That would be pretty B.A. That first link Zmanz had actually did have a Batman themed helmet, but it looked kinda weird.
I'm actually getting a motorcycle in Sept, Oct, when the new Triumph line comes out. I don't think I could get away with riding with a cape, cowl and suit on, though :toocool
I just like the idea of a cowl being built around some manner of functional helmet. If we kick around enough ideas, we might just come up with something workable.
I really dig Apocalypton's work up-armoring cowls and suits too. Maybe that's the way to go. Can't help but think there's got to be a way to go the other way round and start with a functional helmet.
