Making pieces from fiberglass.

Hey bros, Had a quick question.
I want to make some gauntlets and possibly some other armor pieces out of fiberglass so I went to my local marina and saw something called fiberglass cloth.
Is this the stuff I need? Would it work? Also, should I use epoxy resin or polyester resin? I want these pieces to be as durable/hard as possible.
Please give me whatever advice you can offer, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Re: FIBERGLASS?

Fair enough! You'll wanna make your sculpt with a firm material to keep detail, and then make a soft mold, That will allow the fiberglass casts to pull easily. You gotta work with it a bit first... don't just jump in ;)

the cloth is infact the glass component of fiberglass. with out it it will just be resin.

if you get a kit it should come with the fiber glass sheet and the resin needed. :up

Re: FIBERGLASS?

You'll need
1/ fiberglass matting (cloth)
2/polymer resin and catylist
3/brushes
4/silicone mould
5/gel coat/resin thickener (for making a gelcoat layer)

Put the first layer (gelcoat) into the mould then let it start to set, when its tacky
put a normal layer of resin (make sure you use the catalyst) and put the cut up cloth peices around the mould then dab the cloth down with extra resin, try to avoid any air pockets and leave to set.....hey presto all done.

WARNING make sure your in a ventilated room or outside,if you can smell the resin its not ventilated enough.
when cutting grp wear a mask or you'll breathe in the fine powder.

Re: FIBERGLASS?

There's an EXCELLENT thread running over at the RPF which discusses the different fiberglassing techniques in great detail, and makes some quality recommendations. A MUST read for anyone new to the game:

http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=54146

I'm right in the middle of doing a decent sized fiberglass project, and strongly recommend something like 1630 for a gel-coat, then west systems epoxy resin for your base.

Best of luck!

I use Epoxy resin as there isn't nearly as much odor as the Polyester...and I use the fiber glass cloth for molds that are larger and glass fiber for the smaller stuff

If possible you should avoid the Polyester resin. The stuff is extremely toxic and therefore should ONLY be used with VERY GOOD ventilation. Epoxy is the way to go. Only thing is, epoxy resin (at least the stuff I've used) takes alot longer to set up.

Thanks for all the info brothers, it helps out a lot to hear from people who not only know what they are doing, but understand what I am talking about. I was explaining to the manager at the marina that I was using it to make props and he thaught I meant propeler :raiseeybrow . Thanks again

I would also recommend that you by some type of a filler for your resin so it won't be so runny...use you poly-fil fibers to thicken up each batch of resin I use.
