Fixing a tear in urethane with photos.
I was all set to display my new Begins suit freshly mounted to the best undersuit in the world, when it tore on the right shoulder before I could even post a pic. Can someone please help me. A new set of armor is on the way, but in the mean time I plan on using URE-BOND II and a scab piece of urethane from the underside. I will than brush on 40 over the patch for a temporary fix. I know the split will be somewhat visible but I want to try to make it last for a while. Any help from you bros with the know how would be great. First pick is me getting ready and [sign in to see URL]!....HELP

Re: Brother with a tear on urethane!! HELP (with pics)
Batbrat was able to salvage his torn cowl. I'm sure he's going to chime in here soon with some advice...

Re: Brother with a tear on urethane!! HELP (with pics)
Rob you know me so well
SAdly, the rip I had was not in a stressed area and was nowhere near that big.
What I did was use superglue.
I put a very thin* bead along the edge of the rip and then line the tear up so it's as seamless as possible. The glue I use sets in about 10-15 seconds depending on how much airflow the area has. Hold the rip closed until it cures.
Once it cures to a decent level, put a dab of glue on teh exterior of the rip. I'd say I used just enough glue that it would cover the flat head of a pencil eraser. I put it at the "closed" end of the rip and smoothed it along the rip with my finger.
I can't guarantee you'll have hte same results, as your rip is in an area of armor that is a bit more susceptible to pressure and movement.
Since you said you have a new set of armor coming anyway, it's not like you can't experiment, right?
this is the exact same tube of glue that I used:

*I cannot stress enough that you have to use a thin amount of glue. the stuff I used dries rigid and can ruin the armor if put on too thick. if you just do it in a thin "skin," it should hold

Re: Brother with a tear on urethane!! HELP (with pics)
brat is right - that's a pretty high stress area.
You want to first stop the tear from getting bigger. Where the tear end you want to make a small hole. Soldering iron works nice for this. Believe it or not this will stop the tear in it's tracks.
Then your idea for patching it from the back should work. It'll never look perfect but at least it will still function.
I bet this is a really soft urethane? That's one of the problems with it even though it feels great.

Re: Brother with a tear on urethane!! HELP (with pics)
Yikes!! I've been hearing alot of torn urethane stories lately. Yeah superglue or urebond is about all you can do. I don't know how long it takes for urebond to cure though.

Re: Brother with a tear on urethane!! HELP (with pics)
Here is a pic of the progress so far. Thanks for the great info. Super glue is a bad idea since it is not flexible etc. So far all I did was use a soldering iron to make a small hole above the tear.(Thanks Inkmonkey) I applied a thin coat of brush on 40 from the rear. Once the ure-bond comes I will try to install a patch of fresh material to the backside and than fill the hole with some tinted brush on 40. Any more ideas or help would be great. It will d be different once on, and not in my closet, but I heard ure-bond is the balls. I will be doing the upper armor over again but thought I could use this one in the meantime.

Why would you poke a hole in your armor? Are you nuts?
:lol
Just kidding, bro. You did a good job so far. Tear is hardly noticeable. Fill in that hole and you're in business.
