Screen accurate capes for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight / flocked parachute silk

Have had someone working on something for me and wanted to share the first prototype pics. If you've ever watched the extra features on the Batman Begins dvd you would know that Lindy Hemming (the costume designer) says the velveteen they first used for a cape got waterlogged so they invented a new fabric. They took the finest parachute silk (which is not silk but nylon) and electrostatically flocked it. This involves running a current that kind of shoots small fibres onto the surface of the nylon which has been covered in glue. Gives it that velvet appearance but it is much more lightweight and waterproof.

The first try was great but the nylon is not parachute silk and a little too heavy. Hopefully the 2nd try will yield perfect results.

First pic was taken with flash on. The fabric is much darker. So dark that it is hard to photograph without flash.

Still working on the accurate pattern as well. Hoping to gain some insight on that real soon.

And a couple pics of screen used capes for comparison. You can see that it has this slight shimmer when photgraphed with flash and looks less black.

Feedback is welcome.

Not sure if it will be worthwhile to make more yet. We'll see...

Special thanks to Indakin on his hard work on the pattern.
He is quite talented with incredible attention to detail.
 :cheers

When I read about how the screen used cape was made I thought that no one would ever have a truly screen accurate cape. The people on this board continue to amaze me. Bravo!

I didn't figure out the process. I leave that to much better men. Well...more interested men. :wink

It's actually not that uncommon a process. It's just hard to find anyone to do it to sheets of fabric. And it is especially hard to find someone to agree to do it for a minimum that isn't 10,000 yards.

But back to what's important - what does everyone think of my dog?
