Comparing Begins Urethane Cowls

I thought I'd post this here as a little community service, for those who have bought different cowls and had fitting issues. I've gone through three different Begins cowls made by three different artists, all of them exceptional sculpt quality.

My first cowl was a Bob Dullam sculpt. Very big and intimidating. As a fan of all of Bob's work, I was excited to acquire it to go with my Begins urethane armor I also acquired from him.

Image

Unfortunately, my neck is short, and Bob's cowl sculpt has a long neck. While it fit my head perfectly, the neck would squish and fall inward. I would recommend Bob's Begins cowl for brothers who have big heads and long necks.

My second cowl, which I have used until receiving my third one, was sculpted by he who shall remain nameless. I don't think anyone has ever had an issue with the quality of some of nameless man's work, aside from long waits and other issues related to non-delivery. However I got this before our relationship fell into that morass.

Image

It's a very nice sculpt, as accurate as Bob's, although a little on the small side. While the neck was short enough to accommodate my short neck, I've got a big jaw so the mouth opening would always pull back tight. I would recommend this cowl for smaller sized brothers, with smaller noggins, it will fit right against your jawline and brow if you aren't big boned in the skull.

Finally, I was able to acquire the Bronze Armory cowl in urethane. It's definitely not a Bob D recast. In fact, I'm not sure what the lineage is as far as it being an original sculpt or casting off a screen used, but for a guy with a big head, big jaw and short neck, it fits perfectly on me and looks great as well. So for guys with big noggins, I would recommend for fitting purposes, this is the one to go with. The neck splits the height difference between the Bob D and nameless one.

I'll take pics this weekend of me in my Bob D suit with the new perfectly fitting cowl to share, in the meantime I hope that my experiences looking for the best Begins cowl fit for my head having tried what I consider the three best sculpts out there is helpful to others wanting to know in advance the different sizing issues. I feel like Goldilocks trying the three different choices in the bear's house trying to find the perfect fit...

Ok this confirms that the BA cowl is definitely the best looking (imo). It just has the crisper, more defined lines. This is a very helpful thread :up

Good thread. Always planned to get a BA before Bob offered the foam ones. The BA definitely has that right "look" to it. Hard to describe, but after looking at the movie cowl so much, you can tell at a glance what cowls are right and wrong. I've had Bob's urethane, J's urethane, and had nitpicks with both, but the foam was great. I was always interested in the cowl Drftfan was offering too, made from Bob's Begins bust.

I enjoyed seeing this. Especially with the pics and the 360 views. Thanks!

I simply love what you have done with the place. Heavy Metal meets House and Garden. Not many people can be a Summer and Winter. But you pull it off nicely.

The first set of pics of Bobs cowl are sweet, nice job with the lighting Jerry. That is his latest sculpt, the one he uses for foam, the one I have the mold of for urethane.

The Janty cowl is not even remotly accurate.
The BA cowl is a cleaned up recast of Bobs first BB cowl sculpt.

I have all of these cowls in my possession, and I also have 2 versions of the real cowl. One being my mold off a stunt silicone cowl, the second being a copy right from the batshop molds.

None of the fanmade sculpts are that close, the real thing has so many subtle details, it is truly amazing. Bobs latest sculpt is far and away the closest thing you can get. If anyone is interested in owning a copy of that, or the real thing, I can probably help out. ;)

Great comparison post.

All I can say is go with Bob, always go with Bob !!!

The other 2 are untrustworthy people, I am down alot of money on those 2 and it has soured my costuming experience unfortunately.

The only thing that keeps my head up was my dealings with Bob, fantastic customer service and quality second to none.

Re: Comparing Begins Urethane Cowls

Bob explained to me how he molded his cowl larger to allow for the shrinkage when casting in foam so when I get his foam cowl, I expect it will fit as well as the urethane BA cowl I got in trade. Thanks for the clarifications about the BA cowl, although I can't seem to find pictures or identify ones that are of Bob's original sculpt that the BA was reworked from?

Here is a pic of Bobs older sculpt, (the BA recast)

Here is a pic of Bobs latest sculpt beside the real thing:

I will try and get some better pics, I have redone the real cowl mold since in a matte finish, I just have to find the time to pull a Bob cowl to get the pics as I do not have one made right now.
