Re: ledger

Here's some pics of it so far. Other than some detail work and cleaning up,his face is about done.
This will be my first attempt at a silicone bust...punched hair, glass eyes, etc.

Anything you see that's 'off' enough to be concerned about? Overall shape, features, proportions, skin detail, etc.?

I re-worked the brow and eye area,as well as the mouth and scars from the original sculpt. Like I said, the whole eye area seems to be weak for me.
I didn't expect this to be perfect and realize it isn't,but as long as it looks like who it's supposed to,and the good outweighs the bad,I'm OK with it.

The ears were a first for me. I got away with doing only half an ear when he had hair.

Basically,in your opinion,is there anything I could have/should have done for a better likeness or overall sculpt,or do I just need more practice?
I'll be starting a new one in the near future,so any helpful hints will be greatly appreciated. :)

Re: ledger

well lets see.
Two things I noticed instantly. one the ears. from the side shot, notice how squared off you have the ears in relation to the rest of the head. Most people usually have ears tilted backwards, i.e. the bottom of the ear should be tilted towards the front. this is a common human anatomy thing, I've made that mistake a few times, not tilting the ears back.
Next I noticed is the clay surface, and the wrinkles. Take a look at the wrinkles just above the eyebrows, If he or anyone were able to make wrinkles that deep, how would it affect the surounding area? Usually for someone to make forehead wrinkles that heavy, the eyebrows would be raised up almost as high as possible, like in an extreme suprised expression. try it in the mirror. See what happens.
One thing on a human face you don't want to do is to rake the surface down too level, ie. like you would a movie batsuit. Human skin is always somewhat uneven, but around the top of the forehead it gets more level and more even.
Another thing to check is how the back of the neck is shaped, and how it meets the skull. check skin around the eyes, they should be pretty even. Make sure that all skin folds are anotomically correct, and are as a result of some facial movement. One mistake I've seen on a lot sculpts is making a skin fold an even crease from point a to point z. You want to vary the intensity of the skin fold. If you don't the skin fold will end up looking too mechanical. i.e. the depth of the fold continuously changes, sometimes stops, then continues on.
Then lastly, is to figure out how much bulk is in those facial applianeces, and how much of that bulk is really him. I used to have a hard time sculpting hair because in sculpting the hair, I would accidently cut into the skull, disrupting the skull. so I chose to do the appliances on a separate hard copy.
all in all, I can see that you've done some homework and tried to address all the likeness issues, I would say, check the anatomy aspect some more. Assuming of course this is meant to be life-like.

Re: ledger

Thanks Bob.
I didn't realize that about the ears,so that's huge. Especially considering my next one is going to be Zachary Quinto/Spock,the ear info is golden. :lol (or at least I'm gonna try)
The right brow was originally raised higher, then I lowered it when I re-worked it,but neglected the forehead,so good call there. It's still meant to be raised a little because he's looking off in that direction, but not nearly as much.
Imagine him sitting at the table during the mob meeting looking in Eric Roberts' direction. That's more or less the look I'm going for.
This sculpt originally had hair and clothes, then I peeled them off for a silicone version.
And I need to get some rakes. Unfortunately,no rake tools were used in the making of this sculpt. But I can see clearly where they are an invaluable tool and would have made this so much easier and faster.

For some reason I have such a hard time with the eye lids and brow areas. I know what they're supposed to look like, but can't seem to get it in 3D form the way I want it.

I can never tell with the scars, and probably did them over about a dozen times. Maybe when I get back to him,I'll shave them off and start over.

Everything is easy enough to fix I think,so thank you for your quick review.

Big help for me and I'm hoping others will get something from this as well.

Looks like it's right from the scene where he climbs out of the body bag. I think you nailed this one, Bob.
