This week I started work on the door unlocking gear assembly. The pewter handles on the exterior still have their rotate-and-spring back functionality. So I connected the center of the handles behind the rosettes to a steel bolt that runs through as the gear axle. Turn the handles, the gears rotate, racks slide down and unlock the doors. So the handles normally sit horizontal (accurate) and turning them down just like in the film scene does the trick. And they stay spring-loaded to return to horizontal. Lots more work to do to finish everything, but the mechanics basically work. This armoire sits somewhere comfortably between a piece of furniture and a vault.nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Fri, 30 Jul 2010 12:33:24 +0000 Re: begins closethttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2208122,from=rss#post2208122https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2208122,from=rss#post2208122Quote:tripleasg wrote: Jimithy I'm totally interested. tripleasg@msn.com thanks Send me a pm.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Jimithy909)Wed, 28 Jul 2010 19:09:33 +0000 Re: begins closethttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2208113,from=rss#post2208113https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2208113,from=rss#post2208113Jimithy I'm totally interested. tripleasg@msn.com thanksnondisclosed_email@example.com (tripleasg)Wed, 28 Jul 2010 18:16:09 +0000 Re: begins closethttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207866,from=rss#post2207866https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207866,from=rss#post2207866impressive! most impressive!nondisclosed_email@example.com (darth rikush)Mon, 26 Jul 2010 08:28:01 +0000 Re: begins closethttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207583,from=rss#post2207583https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207583,from=rss#post2207583I have a torso that might work if you're intrested. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Jimithy909)Thu, 22 Jul 2010 22:43:35 +0000 Re: begins closethttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207579,from=rss#post2207579https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207579,from=rss#post2207579Greg, the new look on your cabinet is stunning! The vertical steel bar sits on a peg, rather than being permanently attached to the handle so I can remove the cowl easily, with no worries about stretching it, stressing out the hanger, or scraping the ears on the ceiling of the closet. I fold the cowl tail underneath, and facing directly at it, and angle the cowl down just slightly enough to hide the fixtures. You don't see any of the hardware that supports it. Gives a great eerie floating effect. Torso hanger is dead simple. Just a men's shirt form with a hole drilled through it, and a 5/8" threaded steel rod inserted all the way through the closet back wall through the inside of the torso form. Secured with brass nuts. I'm still waiting on my new torso, but I chose the shirt firm instead of just a hanger so the chest would barrel out boldly instead of sag. When I see how it hangs I may add metal armatures to support the top halves of the arms and direct the angle of the forearms. The torso hanger was on ebay for $9.nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Wed, 21 Jul 2010 20:23:23 +0000 Re: begins closethttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207405,from=rss#post2207405https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207405,from=rss#post2207405Greg your closet was actually my inspiration! :up how did you mount the torso and cowl? if you look at my pics i used a wooden "L" shaped dowel and a hanger.  :signal nondisclosed_email@example.com (tripleasg)Wed, 21 Jul 2010 15:47:50 +0000 Re: begins closethttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207397,from=rss#post2207397https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207397,from=rss#post2207397Love seeing another closet. Your top trim looks great and the wood is overall very clean and smooth. For mine I went the "roughed up antique" route. I spent a couple of years on it before ever seeing those aforelinked reference photos, but when I did I decided to work on my outer doors more and add the giant ring. Now I'm working on the sides. http://seraphim.ecsis.net/~gregday/photo.JPG My other pictures are at: http://gregday.org/batman And then maybe I'll think about actually building functional wooden gears connected to the handles that unlock it. For handles, I used and recommend http://www.directdoorhardware.com/ There's a ton to look through and decide. I think mine are pewter, painted to match the brass chinese medallion I welded them to. For metal shelves, you will definitely want to contact a company in Washington state called K & K Industries <http://kkindustries.com> They fabricated my shelves in steel based on the design I sent them, and $120 and 7 days later they were at my door ready to paint and mount. 110% happy with them. I've obsessed over my closet since about 2006 so I can answer any other questions you might have (automatic overhead lighting, etc.) nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Wed, 21 Jul 2010 14:00:53 +0000 Re: begins closethttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207388,from=rss#post2207388https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207388,from=rss#post2207388actually don't sweat it, i think I've got it figured out. the angle will have to be just right... for this closet. question: center hole is like a half inch larger isn't it? my wife and i have come to a consensus on the exterior... she wins! :raiseeybrow it will look very subdued, like a piece of normal furniture... with brass handles. :lol i get to put it in the corner of our bedroom on my side of the bed. next to my gunsafe :toocool nondisclosed_email@example.com (tripleasg)Wed, 21 Jul 2010 12:27:57 +0000 Re: begins closethttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207320,from=rss#post2207320https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2207320,from=rss#post2207320That's the only problem with offering help, when someone accepts it you actually have to pony up!
