Cost of material for a cape? Cape Idea--New Pics

I was inteding to make my own cape. I've decided on pattern, and went to my local fabric store to price out some black velveteen. Looks like it will be just over $200 just for the material alone??! Is this the norm? Am I looking at the wrong material. It's just a regular velveteen material, nothing too special :huh

WOW!...I'd say it is too much. Maybe not for the material you'd like to use though. I've made all mine for around 30-50 worth of material, they were big, but only one layer (no lining) and usually satin type material.
I guess it would not be unheard of for nice material.

Yikes. That's pretty ridiculous. How many yards do you need?

Perhaps a black sueded/moleskin fabric would work? It's usually much cheaper than velveteen but can have a similar look.

If you can't find something in the store, you could try online. Fabric.com lets you order swatches. Assuming you need about 8 yards, something like the upholstery velvet would be just $56. But again you'd want to try a swatch first: http://www.fabric.com/SearchResults2.aspx?Source=Header&SearchText=black+velvet&CategoryID=1d5f47dc-9991-4088-93f3-26a376046a5e

Thanks for your input. The material really wasn't anything special, at least I didn't think it was. Just a black velveteen, $18/meter. I worked with the woman there, and I showed her my pattern. I need 7 4-5 foot triangles basically, and I could get 2 per section of material. The moleskin material was more expensive.
Anyway, I guess my old cape will have to do for now. It's just cheap polyester one (It's an old Rubies cape that cost me $12 at Walmart) I might try to find some material similar to THAT. It looks ok in the pictures.

The fabric I use is $9.99 a yard, but some fabrics can cost as much as $12.99 a yard, which, multiplied by 8 yards is still only $103, though.

Re: Cost of material for a cape?

I just found the perfect material while randomly browsing around in walmart. I bought two black shower curtains measuring 72" x 70".

The fabric is a fake suede/velvet like polyester and the backside has a shiny satin look. It's lightweight, flows nicely and even makes the right sound when you flap it around. Cost me $23 Canadian each. I was also pleasantly surprised that each curtain is one solid sheet of fabric. I'm going to cut out the cape pattern in two halves and sew them down the middle.

I'll post some pics later.

I'm no sewer, but I've had capes made & shipped for ~$100. Guess it depends on the fabric, as others have said.
