How to make a 3D mold

So I saw that tutorial on making the AA Batarang (instructable) but I decided that it would be better to sculpt one the same way and have it function a little differently. I sculpted two different kinds of 'rangs, but here is one:

Image

I've got the sculpt done and want to mold it up, but this would be my first 3D or two-sided molding/casting and I am not sure how to go about it. I have searched throughout the boards here but can't really find out HOW to do it?

I don't understand whether you just put the thing in a box and pour the stuff around it then cut the mold in half or what? My previous batarang was just one-sided and that is fairly easy to understand. But this I want to be two-sided and just don't get it.

1.Don't get how to make the mold in the first place.

2. Don't get how to get the sculpt out after making the mold.

3. Don't get how you would cast (pour in resin) on a closed (3D) mold.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You'll need to make a simple 2-part mold. Check out this video:

For the mold box, you can use foamcore and a glue gun. Or even simpler, make it from LEGO bricks.

You'd want to make more mold keys than are shown in the video. A marble is good for this (make hemispherical indentations in the clay).

That is exactly what I needed -- thank you so much!

Now what is this "foamcore"?

foam core in simple terms is 2 pieces of poster board with 1/4" of foam in between. You can find it at art and craft stores, usually near the posterboard.

Re: How to make a 3D mold

Ahh I did it! Thanks!

I had a really tough time without the clay -- I couldn't really make it perfect at all, but I think it will work.

The foam board really worked great for making the box!

Now I am not sure what to use for the bolt in the middle of the batarang ... The instructable said to use a "furniture joint", but I have no idea what that is! Do I might try to find something in the kitchen hardware area. Any suggestions?

looks like it might be a Tee Nut
check the specialized fastener bins

*edit* I looks through all of the Instructables and saw the back of the nut.
It's a Lock Nut

Re: How to make a 3D mold

Well, I finished last night, although I need to do some final things like settle on washers, color of lock nuts -- just the final touches. But overall I think it looks pretty good! I really like how it's so easy to open up and lock into position.

Thanks for all the help on this! Couldn't have done it without the help of the BOTB!
