Re: The 'Holy Grail' of BATcowls

Hello to everyone following my progress with my 'Holy Grail' of BATcowls .....

Well, I spent most of the Bank Holiday on this project and I think I'm getting very close to where I want to be, although I have decided that this will now be named the "prototype" as I've realized that this material is behaving completely different to the "dummy" i produced.

Not allowing for the 'Stretch" in the material, the pieces I've been cutting, have come out too large and as such I've had to unpick a lot of the panels and "take them in"!

So, as I've already found a material of the same "stretch" but with a leather look, this will defo be the prototype for the "leather" look cape and cowl.

Right, here's some updated pics ....

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content--
--Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Unfortunately you may be able to see from these close up shots, the lines that have been left from "unpicking" the stitching :0(

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

These last two pics have bits of paper stuck on to see how it looks with eyes, don't worry the eyes will hopefully not look as bad as they do, lol

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The plan this weekend is to be cutting the 'eye' holes, of which the hardened material face plate already has the 'eyes' cut and I plan to 'stiffen' the neck pieces and attach the 'collar' that will eventually be 'inserted/joined' to the cape, creating a 'V' at the front and back.

Wish me luck :0)

Cheers

Wow. You really put my cowl to shame. I want to start back at the begining now. You should make a detailed guide to how you made your cowl. I'm having trouble finding a cowl sewing pattern, and have had mostly bad ideas as far as putting one together that doesn't look puffy and loose at the top. How you managed it looking tight and smooth in the right way is beyond me. Keep it up man, gotta say your cowl is what Ihave always wanted in a cowl. Amazing work.

It's the material bud, it's perfect for the job ... the basic form of the cowl is taken from a baseball cap I've got that is sewn in parts that follows the contours of the head and then the stretch of the material allows it to form over the head even more.

Have you posted any pics on here of what you're producing?

Update time...

Been able to do quite a bit the past few days so here's a few update pics.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content--
--Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The eyes are cut, but not 100% happy with them, although once the whites are in, they don't look too bad, but I already have a plan to make them look more "ANGRY"!

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The collar to the cowl is on and as you can see in the pictures, is pinned in place on the cape ...

This will be changing as I've been staring at BAT's over the last few days and think the front needs narrowing on the shoulders and made higher at the front, so that the chest logo is more in view when the cape is open.

So over this weekend the cowl will hopefully become fully part of the cape!.

Cheers BATfans!

Speaking from experience here, Yes, you'll want to pull that neckline up more. And to balance the design, the shoulders as well. The issue with the neckline being so low is that when you throw the cape back over your shoulders, the entire front will want to roll up in front like a window blind because the material is trying to clear the shoulders and once it gets even with the material on the shoulders it will all want to pull back against itself and roll. And if you throw the entire cape back past your shoulder line and down you back, it'll roll and choke the heck out of you.

I'm really digging the design work on this. What did you do for the sub-structure in the ears to keep them stable? Can't wait to see it finished and suited up for us. emoticon

Re: The 'Holy Grail' of BATcowls

Another update time...

Snapped a few pics on the iPhone this morning so thought I'd post them on here and let people know, I haven't given up on things lol, just that other things kind of get in the way sometimes so Bats has to go on the back burner ... at least I'm not under any time constraints, so I can pick things up when ever I can ....

The cowl is now completely attached to the cape, so it's an "All-in-one" cape n' cowl and a zip is now in place ... so i basically throw it around my shoulders, zip it up half way, then pull the cowl over my head, then pull the zip all the way up!

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The cowl can be removed when needed and as you see sometimes in the comics, it drapes behind me on the back of my shoulders ... this weekend i'll tale some shots of this and post them on here.

The problem of the weight of the cape pulling the front upwards when its draped over my shoulders has been solved, by inserting a metal frame in the collar that runs from one side of the cape from the point at where the cape joins just above the chest logo, all the way up, around my back and down the other front side of the cape, meeting the other point, again above the chest logo. The piece of metal is temporary for now as I need to find a longer piece, that will eventually follow the complete 'V' line of the shoulders, back and front and will be sewn in to a hidden pocket.

The basics of the design is the cap n' cowl an 'all-in-one' design unzips and separates at the chest logo and is then lifted off me, with the 'V' collar staying rigid, it sounds strange and kind'a difficult to explain, i'll get some pics up on here soon to show, if people would like to see!

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content----Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The cowl still needs a bit of 'Fine' finishing, but it's virtually there!

I'm almost ready to move on to replacing the body suit, which I have a few different ideas, have thought about 'sub-dye' but I can't find anyone over here in the UK :0( Not to mention finding anyone like "Eastbay" is just ridiculous! My main train of thought at the moment is to make up a custom pattern and sew my own ...

Oh, and the Yellow 'oval' chest logo is changing to the larger 'black bat'

Anyway's think I've gone on a bit too much for now, so let me know what you think guys :0)

Cheers BATfans!

Muscle Under Suit

I've been pretty quiet posting on here lately, but that's not to say I haven't been working on my creation .... in fact, I've actually been doing quite a bit!

Unfortunately I've been very lazy and not posted up any details of what I've been doing (plus I've been busy on other things, you know boring stuff like WORK!)... I've taken pics, but again not nearly as much as I should have!

The cowl is shaping up pretty well, but I've now started to work on other areas of the build as well!

Anyways ... I decided that I need something to bulk my frame up and show a bit of muscle, but without going to the gym lol ... so my answer was a Muscle Suit!

Have you seen the cost of a good one ... a small fortune!!!

So I decided to have a go and make one!

Here's a couple of pics of what I'm up to …. for more info and pics pop over to ][sign in to see URL] and see all the details so far :0)

PS: There's loads more to come, I just need to get around to posting it up!
