Project 89 continues...
So, I figured I'd start from the, well, bottom with my Keaton suit. Found the Nikes, got me a couple of bottles of leather dye and went to town:
A generic pair of Air Trainer III. Not the best color for the project, but at least most part of the soles are black, which makes things easier.
Testing the dye... I learned that two bottles were needed - one for the plain leather, one for the nubuck trim. If only "regular" dye is used on nubuck, the result will be purpleish and splotchy - much like trying to paint the shoe with a Sharpie.

Re: Project 89 - the beginning... boots
After dyeing the leather, it was time to move over to the nubuck. As it is a lot more porous compared to regular leather, nubuck needs a lot more dye to turn black.
Just the plastic parts left to paint...
I thought about different ways to tackle the boot tops. Making my own, cutting up existing boots... finally decided to try equestrian short caps/gaiters. They're available in leather and synthetic, and are quite inexpensive. I went for a pair in stretchy faux leather. Figured it won't matter if I mess them up with superglue, velcro or whatever I choośe to attach the armor with.
A quick test fit. Really comfortable - will see what they look like with armor attached.

Re: Project 89 - the beginning... boots
A little more progress - just painted/dyed the soles. Apparently, the nubuck dye is suitable for synthetic materials as well, and it seems to stay on the plastic, won't rub off, at least...

Re: Project 89 - the beginning... boots
Looking awesome so far dude :up If you continue with such a high level of detail in your posts I'd recommend this one to go into the archives as a how to. Sadly there's many pics missing from alot of those topics now, but a total run down on an '89 build would be helpful to a lot of people I'm sure

Re: Project 89 - the beginning... boots
Thanks, guys. Still waiting for the boot armor - expecting it to arrive this coming week.
Bought the boot covers off eBay - they are short chaps for horse riding. Figured I'd try those instead of cutting up a pair of boots. Short chaps are cheap, too, especially the pleather ones. Trick is to find a pair with as little moldings, detailing and logos as possible. Also, being inexpensive, I figured I might experiment a bit with attaching the armor (haven't decided if I'll go the glue or velcro route yet) without risking to make an expensive mess...
As for the boot armor - read somewhere that the originals were leather, with visible stitching. Does this apply to both the shin armor and the "spat"? The ones I ordered are made of rubber, and I've been toying with the idea of covering them with a leather grain-pattern vinyl if this would make them more screen-accurate.
Don't know if my cobbling together a '89 suit will be archive-worthy material... though I appreciate the suggestion! Noticed the loss of pics in the old threads too - I am planning to document this build though, and will post more pics if that's what you wish. :)

Re: Project 89 - the beginning... boots
Wao....your idea made my day...i got frustrated with my first attempt on making an 89 boot because of the higher part. Couldnt sew it with anything... now ive learn. Thanks and i hope to see your work finished with success.
