Re: Project 89 continues...

I wonder if the guys at spandexman would take a commission, send them the correct fabric and pick a size and style from their exisitng range?
I'd be interested to see the difference close up to their liquid leather range and Batnar's fabric too. :-)

You do not want to add latex on your spandex exposed areas. It's the worst feeling ever.
I did that once after seeing some suggestions in the ref section and - no way - ever again.

Plasti dip also isn't very stretchy and will crack and peel eventually. I did that as well.

My best alternative was learning how to sew my own undersuit from scratch using matte vinyl finish 4 way stretch spandex. So far, still my favorite fabric. But unless there's a shop that has ready made suits with that spandex type, you'll have to do what I did and buy a sewing machine and start stitching! :)

Please tell me more - how did applying latex make it horrible? Good to hear these things before I go ahead with the project...

The matte vinyl finish 4 way stretch spandex sounds excellent. A quick google showed that there are some undersuit vendors offering suits in that material. Have to research further - thanks for the tip!

Also, regarding screen accuracy - as I've heard it, the '89 suits were rubber armor on spandex, while Returns suit had a mix of pleather pieces on the undersuit as well. Don't know if this is the case, as I would imagine there would be some hero suits, some stunt ones etc. (Bell tower fight suit looks a lot like regular spandex, for instance.)
Would appreciate if someone in the know would like to chime in!

In shot mate, if the undersuit is latexted you will sweat a LOT as the air can't get in to dry the skin, and it will stick to your skin. I'm pretty sure the liquid leather spandex is pretty close to screen accurate. Once it's on and has stretched out a bit it really blends in with the armour :-)

Here's my current alternatives:

Image

the armor pieces and cowl have a raw latex finish, no plastidip or armorall. Regular spandex to the left, "leather look" suit on the right.

Somehow, the leather look suit looks a bit too shiny, though I believe some of it will wear off. I guess that the armor will blend in a little better after it's cleaned and surface treated.

Opinions? Which one? Or should I scrap both, in search of the Ultimate Undersuit? :wink

For what it's worth, here's a few shots of my undersuit. It's the liquid leather from Spandexman man. The armor is latex sprayed with black plastidip.

This is really the only place where my undersuit is ever exposed. -And that's only because I use Returns gloves-(sonar armor covers almost every inch on me haha)

The armor and undersuit aren't a perfect match and I had thought about latexing the exposed areas. But now I'm reconsidering that haha.

Ok, that liquid leather stuff does have a nice texture. And I'm ruling out my shiny spandex suit as of now... couldn't stand the noise it makes anyway. :lol

Though I feel liquid leather might fall under the category "future upgrade" and go with regular spandex at this point. Going to have to get a feel for the costume to begin with, and right now, the undersuit budget is blown already... as in my botched latex suit attempt and the two suits in the pic.

I do understand the obvious issues with latexing the undersuit, though I might still attempt it... not the entire suit, obviously - I'm considering to cover the visible joints in the front/legs and leaving back of the suit alone.

All your views and opinions are much appreciated! Please keep them coming...

This is what vinyl matte fabric looks like. It's a 4 way stretch spandex fabric (always make sure it's 4 way stretch. I once made the mistake of ordering 2 way stretch)

As you can see, the armor and under suit really blends well together.

It's also very comfortable, lightweight but strong enough to hold your armor in place.
I should note that when I adhered my armor to this suit, I also flipped it inside out (well as much as I could) and added liquid super glue (any kind of cyano based glue) along the areas that were glued, to reinforce the bond from both inside and out. This way you don't have to worry about your armor peeling away with the rubber matte coating over the spandex fabric itself.
I learned this through trial and error.

Now, the latex thing. About 5 years ago, I purchased a regular spandex suit from Ebay and mounted my latex armor to it. Then I took black liquid latex from monstermakers.com and began lightly brushing it around the exposed areas (on my mannequin). It looked great. But then came Halloween night and within 15 minutes of wearing it, I was going crazy noticing my body wasn't able to breath. I mean every time I took a breath, a vacuum suction would occur and yes, lots and lots of sweating. It was the worst experience of all my experiences wearing this suit.

Using the vinyl matte fabric is by far, the best and most comfortable solution I've pursued yet. I'm not 100% sure what they used for the film, even after talking with Vin on facebook. She couldn't recall the exact coat.
But this looks pretty darn close to the real thing. It has no texture on it. I looks like a rubbery fabric. Your body will breath through this and keep you a lot cooler than a latex coated suit. It's very stretchy.

Your next goal would then be to obtain armor pieces that is soft, pliable and not too thick. Makes a big difference.
Currently, I'm using a very rigid set of latex armor. I love it and hate it at the same time. I looks great and all but I have to struggle with certain movements, especially with the leg armor. Rigid material will peel or damage your suit when you try to move.

The shoulder blades of my 89 armor almost always came apart from every under suit I tried. I finally had to trim it down and create a higher groove so lifting my arm was no longer a problem. Had the latex been soft and thinner, I'd have less issues.
Always consider the fact that movie suits used foam latex armor.
Anywho, hope this helps bros! :up

Thank you, BatNar. I understand how you must've felt - as mentioned, I toyed with the idea of gluing my Bat pieces to a latex fetish catsuit, but after trying (prying?) it on, I realized that being embedded in latex all around would make me nauseous and a generally unhappy person.
And, again, that 4-way stretch material looks fabulous! Definitively something for the future upgrade.
And yes, movie suit parts were indeed foam latex. That shot of Keaton putting the cowl on through the mouth opening makes me jealous... won't try that with my raw latex cowl...

Thanks again for all your input. Will ponder the undersuit issue further. Lots of food for thought here, gentlemen...

Absolutely bro. :up
Oh tell me about it... lol. I dream of having a foam latex suit one day but unfortunately, way out of my range and foam gets damaged too easily. Not worth it for what we're into.
I'm trying to learn more about possibly having a set of armor made in urethane foam that is skinned with either a very stretchy urethane or latex. I was told latex would leech from the foam but I'm almost willing to find a way to work around that problem.
Perhaps casting the urethane thicker around the edges where it would be bonded to the suit, and the rest to be filled with thin layer of foam just to help it hold it's shape.

...Hmm...
