Also planning a complete rebuild of the Batsuit Closet at proper scale. Early stages right now, but I do have correct size steel shelves. Not the final color, but a good start.

Hit the shelves with a blast of Antique Brass to give them a nice shading pattern that makes them look aged without looking decayed. I will probably do one more coat to even it out a little more and then seal it.

Once we move into the new house I will get started on the wood construction. This new armoire will be at least 50 inches wide. I love V2's of projects. It's so fun to try again using everything you've learned.

Starting on the wood portion. Made most of the drawer facades -- just the 6 large bottom ones to go. Then onto the back and side walls.

All drawer panels cut to size and ringpull recesses bored out. Just need to stain and mount on the back wall.

80"h x 50"w

Estimate with top trim and some short feet this will be 84" tall overall. Absolutely massive.

Re: Small upgrade for Batman Begins equipment case

Just a test shot with side walls and shelves in place. Side walls are not fully built yet, and the suit & cowl mounts aren't installed yet. Still need to figure out some stuff; for example the suit and cowl both will sit higher than shown here. But this is a decent scale test.

My shelf brackets are a bit large compared to original, but the shelf tops are right, and I believe the overall armoire scale is right (about 48" wide, 80" tall interior).

Hopefully have the armor mounts installed in a few days, side walls all finished, and then I can get to work on the internal suit support -- i.e. the shoulder and arm supports that will put it in the correct pose (like in my avatar).

Really need an undersuit emoticon

(Torso, cowl, cape, and gauntlets are from inkmonkey/coofunkcurly/Kevin)

Floor/legs attached
Ceiling lights installed
Cowl mount done
Undersuit and torso mount next

Going to need to build a new torso mount with articulated arm supports to get the suit pose just right. That's probably 2-3 weeks out.

Getting closer. This thing now stands at 83" tall. Will probably get another 2" from the top trim and casing.

Re: Small upgrade for Batman Begins equipment case

Articulated arms are in, but this is just a test pose for them. I will not be using the black torso form with the long neck. The plan is to move the arms to the white form which I modded this week to be narrow enough at the waist to hide around the hip area. Pulling in the lower 1/3 of the armor and 'sharpening up' the codpiece area goes a long way toward the intimidating pose.

Next two weeks will be focusing on joining the new arms with the old torso form, getting the pattern for the undersuit nailed down, and building out the hanger/mount for the torso. Going with 5/8" threaded steel with a mount that is shaped like -[ so the torso can't roll side to side on it. That was a real problem with V1. It'll be a relief to finally not have the suit sitting on a rolling plastic cart.

Re: Small upgrade for Batman Begins equipment case

Today's work was all about the suit mount. I initially planned to use a white or beige jersey covered torso form to closely match the original photo, but the torso form that the articulated arms attach to is just so good, I tried it out. So, after trimming down the neck and the hips with the jigsaw, I was very impressed with how well it worked. I considered moving the shoulder cups over to my white form, but the shoulders aren't really designed for that. I still might strip away the black jersey and put on white, but this is definitely the form to go with.

The other big thing is I finally looked at all my scrap metal parts and figured out how I want to do the mount. A 5/8" threaded steel rod right through the back wall of the closet, with big washers and hex nuts on either side. No wiggle at all. You could literally support the entire piece on this rod.

Then a base bolted (not screwed) right onto the torso form, with a wing nut to tighten it. Also no wiggle on that end. The steel rod goes right through the torso form and butts up against the inside front for the best support.

So, so glad to have this thing off the utility cart and properly mounted. Next I begin serious work on the undersuit and the front doors.

Edit: now with cape

Re: Small upgrade for Batman Begins equipment case

So the Wayne Enterprises equipment case is one "sub-project" of my Begins project (the main part being the Batsuit Armoire) but there is another little sub-project: a nice display for my real deal League of Shadows Ninja Gauntlets.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I picked up a decorative trunk from a home decor store and made a few modifications. First I used #000 steel wool and Brasso to rub most of the black off the brass parts and make them a little shiny again. Then I got some burnt umber paint and black acrylic wash and recolored the wooden areas to match my armoire better. Then I lined the interior with vinyl.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

TODO:
- Use the dark red fabric to create another layer of protective, padded lining inside. It's a little ostentatious for the Dark Knight, but the idea is that this is stuff from the LoS monastery, and fits in more with (fake) Ra's al Ghul's style of clothing.

- Replace the side handles with pull bars/short poles, sort of 'shrine' style.

- Add hanger mounts for the gloves to slide down over, inside the lid.

My absolutely favorite detail is the medallion I added to the front. Not too on-the-nose I hope emoticon

Baby steps on the closet, but been trying to get these right for a long time. Handle rosettes! With the help of Futurescape3D on the RPF, these were printed with a metallic brass composite for some added durability and weight. I put the first few layers of paint and polish on them last night, and have a little more to go before they are ready. This is almost all the pieces needed to build out the front doors. Still needed: external lock and rattan for the lower section.

Re: Small upgrade for Batman Begins equipment case

Not a big deal, but I decided I will be building out all 4 handles on the armoire. The top two will be fully mechanized and rotate the interior gears and move the locking posts that will unlock the doors and allow them to open. The bottom handles will be dummy handles that will turn but not be connected to anything.

The trick is that the handles are sold in sets where only one has the axle that extends from the back, which I will connect to the gear. But using 2 pairs, I can use the axled handle from each set up top, and the flat back handle from each set as a dummy on the bottom.

I repainted everything to match. Handles are a bit more bronzed, and rosettes are now a bit shinier and match the ring medallion more.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Working on the gear/rack system now. I'd like to have most of the pieces of the doors ready to go before I start staining and assembling. The teeth of the gears and the posts will be CNC carved for a perfect fit. I've mocked up and tested everything in cardboard and so far the design will work. This was a big challenge on V1 of the armoire, and I'm glad to say it's going to be a much cleaner, stronger, better engineered build this time.

The next challenge is going to be finding or recreating the wicker/rattan mesh grille on the bottom front of the doors. I've found close, but not the exact pattern.

Let me know if you had ideas for that!
