Now, I've never been more than about 60% satisfied with the finish on this. The source reference is very badly lit and shot, and it's hard to tell just what is going on, nevermind all the dirt and weathering on it. But I knew that my closet was far too 'orange' so I experimented with some new stains this weekend. I'd been afraid of going too red, specifically "barn red" but it turns out that's mostly what I needed. So I mixed up about 70% Barn Red/30% Sedona Red, and brushed it on top of what I already had, and I have to say I'm really beginning to love this. I also started refinishing the large center ring on the front, adding in about 4 different Rub 'n Buff colors to get a nice patina of copper, bronze, and gold. It's beginning to shape up, but I'm not done yet. I want to bring out some more of the deeper details with a black wash, and do lots more buffing to get more shine out of the highlights. I'll do the same to the handle rosettes. I'll probably apply the wash over some of the red parts too to add character and age. I'm not quite mentally ready to give it the same amount of weathering as the original, which has chunks of wood missing and huge stripped areas. That may not ever happen. I'm fine with mine looking slightly newer. Beyond that, I've begun working on the details for the sides which have always been unfinished. The only question is... if I ever need to move this thing, how the heck am I going to get it out of the home office and down the hallway? nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Tue, 23 Mar 2021 11:11:36 +0000 Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Casehttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2346216,from=rss#post2346216https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2346216,from=rss#post2346216I agree with Red's sentiments. It's essentially made of wood, with some 3D printed embellishments on the outside. Inside are 2 trays of equipment. Tray 1 is mostly based on the screen reference of Bruce Wayne's walkthrough with Lucius Fox, but a little bit extended. The metal data plate on the lid of the case is actually the original screen-used prop from that scene. - Grapple Gun - Belt - Belt Containers - Utility Harness - Extra Grapple Clips - Grapple Darts - Data sheets Tray 1 lifts out with some straps on the ends to access the bottom layer. Tray 2 is "all my other TDK trilogy props" that needed a home. Now I realze it doesn't make a ton of sense that a Wayne Enterprises case would have bat-themed objects in it, but maybe the story is that Bruce added them afterwards? Anyway, that's why they are on Tray 2. - Pneumatic Mangler + Gauntlet - Cape Clips - 6 small metal Batarangs + holder - 2 loose small metal Batarangs - 3 large metal folding batarangs - Tumbler Key - Boot Sonar Beacon - Mini-Mines - Grapple Holster On the underside of the lid are some aluminum plaque versions of the data cards, embedded into the protective foam layer. This detail is not screen accurate; I just thought it would look cool. My first thought was to have Leiter paint them to match the belt, since he made that and has the Begins color down 100%. He would also repaint my Grapple to match in the darker Begins bronze-ish color. All the buckles are machined and laid out here, in (mostly) the assembly order. Of course I can't sew anything together until all the coloring is done, but this gives me an idea of how the final harness will look. Obviously the leg wrap connecting straps are missing and some nylon lengths are off, but it's generally right. Also, I only recently realize that this thing is supposed to have shoulder pads. So I picked up some generic pads to sew in once all the other placement is done. I've been waffling on this harness project for about 18 months, so it's really gratifying to actually have the parts produced and nearly ready for final assembly. Next 1/6 scale Hot Toys harness for comparison. nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Tue, 28 Apr 2020 21:17:25 +0000 Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Casehttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345991,from=rss#post2345991https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345991,from=rss#post2345991You might consider powder coating the metal parts of if there a gold anodize try that. I'm also building a complete "utility harness" from Begins to go with the belt. I've been craving one ever since kbillan posted his a couple of years ago. I've been working with a really talented CAD modeler to come up with the 3D designs for all the buckles, and they've been CNC'd in aluminum. I should have them all in hand within 2 weeks, and then they'll be paint matched to the belt. Here's a layout mockup using the models we made (I am aware the 4 quick-release buckles have an asymmetry issue, and that was fixed before these were sent to production) Reference was either screen grabs or the Hot Toys version for parts there was no clear view of. I'm least sure of the Back buckle since the 1/6 and 1/4 figures do it completely different ways, but I opted to copy the 1/6 version. The Leg connectors were particularly interesting, since on screen it's clear how they are made, but none of the toy versions reproduce this, opting instead of a simple trapezoidal buckle at the hips. Weird! nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Fri, 24 Apr 2020 12:40:31 +0000 Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Casehttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345987,from=rss#post2345987https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345987,from=rss#post2345987Cool display you've got there Greg. nondisclosed_email@example.com (efarrell4)Thu, 23 Apr 2020 10:28:27 +0000 Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Casehttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345985,from=rss#post2345985https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345985,from=rss#post2345985Foam! The cutout for the grapple gun needs a little trimming for a better fit, and I will need to engineer a way for the belt to fold up properly for the look shown on screen. Which is a shame, because it hides most of the belt. The Grapple Dart cutouts are a little deep also, I might pad those up a bit. They are in place in this shot and you can't even really see them. I spent the weekend refinishing the surface of the lid, and I hope to be able to show that soon. I have some very cool ideas about how to handle that. Those are also the wrong latches on the box, but they were a test. I have the correct latches on hand now, and hope to be able to finish up the outside details soon. Next step after securing the foam to the shelf tray will be to build the side panel risers, and then onto the angled block bumpers and feet -- which, in full disclosure, I am not making (Thanks Leiter!) nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Mon, 20 Apr 2020 15:14:22 +0000 Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Casehttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345917,from=rss#post2345917https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345917,from=rss#post2345917Always exciting to see you posting here! About the plate: As far as I know, plates like that are on the front side of a storage box because on top and on the side could be other storage boxes. Always in a corner. In the factory I work we put 2 labels, front top left corner and left side top right corner. That way you are able to store the box in 2 directions. I would not really put it on top, you could put a logo on the top? Anyway, thanks for posting and hope you will be happy with the result.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Phantombatman)Sat, 21 Mar 2020 16:11:52 +0000 Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Casehttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345916,from=rss#post2345916https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345916,from=rss#post2345916After watching so many videos from Adam Savage on Tested.com and his amazing builds of storage containers and cases for his props, particularly the one for his Captain America suit, I was inspired to update my equipment case. So far I've always been using a Pelican 1700 rifle case with custom foam. The aesthetic is not far off from something we might find in the Nolan bat-verse, but honestly I've been really wishing I could have the actual cases as seen on screen. After years of searching, I've concluded those are custom made, so I've decided to build one myself. The main crate of the case I'm building out of poplar wood. Then I'll redesign the foam inserts, attach side latches, and the outer angled "block" pieces will be resin cast. In the past couple of weeks I got the basic box finished, but I didn't really factor in just how large this thing would be in 3 dimensions. It's huge! 32.5" long, 19.5" wide, and almost 17" tall with lid. I made it taller than the original probably is because I'm adding a second layer. The top foam will sit on a shelf that serves as the lid for the bottom layer. The belt and grapple and foam will all lift out, exposing my secondary props underneath it: Batarangs, Mini-Mines, Mangler, Boot Beacon, Tumbler Key, etc. I threw tons of Plasti-Dip on it for a start, and it will get another few coats once the outer blocks are attach. Thanks to Leiter for help with those. One thing I'm not sure of which orientation the Wayne Enterprises data plate should go? nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Fri, 20 Mar 2020 15:08:28 +0000 Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Casehttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345834,from=rss#post2345834https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345834,from=rss#post2345834Some new Grapple Gun darts: This new set is made in bronzed and polished black steel, to replace the printed plastic ones shown earlier. The 3D model was reverse engineered from a CAD screenshot posted on the RPF by the original prop maker. So this is about as accurate as you could possibly get, with some added realism. They fit perfectly down the barrel of my grapple, which is getting some upgrades at the moment. Next step will be attaching a monofilament line to a couple of these.nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Thu, 13 Jun 2019 18:11:35 +0000 Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Casehttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345826,from=rss#post2345826https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2345826,from=rss#post2345826That suit is fantastic! I decided my suit really needed a Bale face for the cowl. So I ordered a casting from Haunted Studios and painted it black. It fits great, and really gives the whole thing a nice statue-esque appearance. But then a few days later, I happened across an eBay find: the same Bale face cast expertly painted by FleshFace with the most realistic detail I have ever seen: I wasted no time in getting some black eye makeup on this guy and trying it out in the cowl: Couldn't be happier with the outcome. Everything comes together beautifully on the mannequin: I still have not yet gathered up the courage to punch the holes in the suit for the cape clips, but I think soon. The cowl rings are on and I'm pretty sure of the positioning. nondisclosed_email@example.com (gregday)Tue, 02 Jan 2018 16:26:59 +0000 Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Casehttps://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2344650,from=rss#post2344650https://bbrotherhoodofthebat.runboard.com/p2344650,from=rss#post2344650Still not a fan of that whole franchise but what you're doing here is astonishing and shows a real dedication to this whole craft.
