Re: Small upgrade for Batman Begins equipment case

Big important steps this weekend!

I finally added the 6" extension to my door panels to get them to the full 78" needed, and bought a new tool to get them fitting
just right: an electric hand planer. Lots of fun.

I decided to go with some narrow hinges instead of my standard wide door hinges, so I wouldn't need to add any extension shims
inside the wall framing. This way the shelves aren't obscured at all when looking straight on, and it keeps down the overall complexity.

Of course the doors will have to come down for finishing, but everything is correctly sized and placed and they swing open quite
nicely. And bonus, my wife will come into the home office more now since it's this thing's presence is not so menacing with the doors closed!

Gear system is still in progress, but hopefully within a few weeks I can make some good progress on the exterior trim panels,
get the medallion ring mounted, and my interior batarang holders installed.

Huge, huge relief to have the "6 walls of the box" done at this point.

edit: Would an admin please move this thread to the Begins/TDK subforum?

Couple of from trim pieces cut, top handles mounted and arches cut. Next will be the bottom half and then stain and final assembly.

Biggest challenge right now is sourcing the wire/grille mesh for the bottom.

Decided I'll be using part Tango_AntBrassPlt2X4 shown here [sign in to see URL]

For the mesh grille on the bottom half of the front doors. It's not 100% accurate, but I got a sample from them and it's great. This stuff is very solid and matches the other antique brass hardware.

This past weekend I put another layer of "floor" on the bottom for better support. I also finally attached the upper trim panels on the doors. When the mesh comes in I'll build out the lower trim that frames it, and put all that together. In the meantime, I can go ahead and stain and lacquer the doors this weekend. Once the mesh and lower handles are installed, I would be satisfied calling the Armoire portion of this DONE. The undersuit is still in the works and I have a little more to do on the WE Equipment case. I have not decided yet if I want to do the triangle design pattern on the outside walls of the closet.

edit:
Here's the latest shot, but it isn't much different to look at yet.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I need to smooth out the edges where the trim is joined, use a small amount of wood filler in some gaps and hopefully have the staining done over the holiday weekend. I probably won't reattach the doors until they are ready to go back up permanently -- i.e. after the bottom half detail is done.

And for a sense of scale, that is my Pelican 1700 rifle case I'm using for the Wayne Enterprises equipment to the right there. With the additional floor support, this beast now stands over 85" tall.

Brass grilles are in, and after a little trimming are ready. I just started cutting the wood for the frames around them, so I expect a few more weekends before those are 100% done. This is where precision matters. The brass material, while not totally accurate, will work great. A little black canvas behind them adds a lot of depth. Really excited to get these done and the lower handles installed.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Gears! These I'm most excited about. Except I misjudged the spacing between the handles a little, and I'll have to rebuild the handle arches and move the handles about 1" farther apart to make these work. Still, the action on these is perfect and will really sell the whole thing. If I push I may have the whole handle system rebuilt and ready by the end of the weekend.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

And with that, I have all the pieces I need to complete this (armoire) build in hand, and it's only a matter of my time and skill to finish it. Undersuit is still pending.

Pretty good week. I haven't done much on the armoire in awhile, but I finally (after > 1 year) got an accurate undersuit. Also today I received a mannequin to work on. I never had legs with my first suit, so this is kind of fun seeing it all come together. In these shots, I don't have the leg armor staged on the undersuit legs, and nothing is glued down yet, but it gives a good idea how it's going to eventually look. It's also creepy as hell being in the same room with it.

The mannequin will make mounting all the armor much easier, and I'll probably keep it around to occasionally swap the suit out from the armoire to this. Just looks too cool not to have it all put together sometimes. Hope to have it all mounted up by the end of the weekend.

Still need to mount the leg, knee, and calf armor. And I do have cape clips, but I haven't brought myself to being able to cut holes in the torso for proper attachment yet. Half the time I'm going to have the torso hanging in the closet, and I don't want the cape holes visible.

Very motivated now to finish the suit closet doors too

Re: Batman Begins Batsuit Armoire & Wayne Enterprises Equipment Case

Got back to work this weekend. Things don't look dramatically different yet, but the handle arches have been completely rebuilt to accommodate wider spacing between the handles, the gears on the reverse side can function.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Also attached the mesh grilles to the backing and staged to see how that's going to work out. Next up: the grille frames. Those shouldn't take too long to cut and stain, and my idea is to plane out a bit on the reverse side for the grilles to inlay.

Other little things to do: stain and attach the crown molding on the outside around the whole closet, apply some lacquer, finalize the lighting wiring.

And here's the gears on the insides of the doors:

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Still need to stain the insides and figure out where to mount the batarang hangers. One unforeseen issue I'm running into now: the vertical bars for the gears are so heavy that their weight is enough to pull them down, even rotating the handles on the front. I don't know yet how to solve this. Maybe there is some sweet spot of tightness where the posts won't fall on their own, but can still be moved when the handles are turned.

Bottom grille frames cut and stained. Just need to cut some grooves into the reverse side so they can lay flat over the mesh and then that can be fully assembled.

The plan is to stain the inside of the doors and crown molding, and have the doors mounted by end of weekend. Getting very close now.

Already starting to do some final waxing/poly and polishing.

Door insides are stained, and I figured how to secure the gears to the handle axles. I may end up doing 1 vertical lock and 1 horizontal (as is accurate) after all due to one handle being looser than the other.

Just waiting on stain to dry and then I believe I'll be ready to mount the doors. However since it's 6PM that may not be today emoticon

Trying to not get ahead of myself and get sloppy as things are wrapping up.

Got a punch list of little items to fix up:
- Crown molding trim pieces need to be detailed (there are 3 dots to carve in every curved section) and stained
- Cut the hole(s) in the ceiling for the locking post(s) to insert. In doing so, decide whether I want both vertical or one vertical/one horizontal
- Thin cover pieces need to be attached on the outer front edges to cover the outer halves of the hinges
- The bottom handles came loose while staining the door backs, so need to re-secure those
- Pressure switch in the door to auto activate the overhead lights
- Find some sort of diffuser cover for the lights so they aren't so intense and focused
- Mount Batarangs!

Gear rack mounting tonight. So, due to reasons I'll need to mount the right assembly vertically, and the left assembly horizontally. But that's okay -- that's accurate!

However, what's not accurate is that I won't be able to put one of the lock bar bracers right on the edge of the door. There just isn't room. So both will go on the inner side of the gear... which is okay. The gear still turns and the bar still moves smoothly and securely. I will however need to trim that bar so only about 2 inches protrudes over the door edge.

So basically, the right door will lock into the ceiling, and the left door will lock into the right door.
