Batman Forever Robin & Sonar Batman 1/6th Scale **FINALLY FINISHED**

Hi to all BOTB members, my name is Daryl and live in Northern Ireland, I'm a big fan of Batman Forever as that was my Batman film growing up and really got me hooked on Batman, I have already got speaking to some members on here, who have been great and very nice to me, so glad to be finally a member here on BOTB.

I have quite a few topics I plan to start here on the board and to show you guys some of my comic artwork and some of my replica collectables from Batman emoticon

First up, I thought I'd start with a recent sculpt I attempted of Robin and Sonar Batman from Batman Forever. I already own the Xensation 1/6th scale Riddler and Two Face, the quality is incredible and cost less than nearly half the price of Hot Toys, great likeness on the 2 made by them, so after buying them I decided I wanted to make Robin and Sonar Batman, to finish off the collection.

I played about with the idea of making Robin and Batman poseable like the Riddler and Two Face versions, but quickly decided it was going to be a lot of work and I was out of my depth.

So decided to stick to a solid pose, statue type figure at 1/6th scale, first up I searched the internet for ideas as a start, not much came up tbh, "this is Batman Forever we are talking about here..." emoticon

I did find a Robin 1/6th scale kit made by Revell, but the pose was imo horrible and not the pose you want a Hot Toy type figure in, but I decided the kit would be great to use as much parts of it as I could.
I then decided that the Billiken Keaton 89 Kit would be great for my base, after shopping around for both these kits, I was shocked at some of the prices they where going for and was worried this was going to be a very expensive build for a custom figure before I even opened a box to start...

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I used a cake making model kit from eBay which was cheap and great to use, I also bought DAS air drying clay in terracotta and realised early on that I was going to need a lot more of this than first expected... as the bits I cut from the Robin Revell Kit i.e. Thighs where not going to fit on the Keaton Billiken Kit. So ended up sculpting a lot more than I first thought I would, but enjoyed the challenge emoticon

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Its not 100% accurate but it was the best I could do, this was also my first time sculpting and after a YouTube video or two on how to or try to sculpt. I was happy to start.

Hope you guys like it and would love to here your thoughts emoticon

The plan now is to get it painted in January.

Parts cut from the Revell Robin Kit, Billken Keaton Kit was too small so cut ankles and raised him up a little bit to better match next to other 1/6th scale, trimmed and sanded down Keaton boot detail and Knee caps as would have to make new ones for Robin now to hide ankle cuts, One leg thigh detail and knecap done in clay as well as crotch and lower stomach muscles.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Finished both legs/kneecaps/boots in clay and added both boot tops and belt, At this stage I decided the keaton gloves had to go that where originally attached in the pictures above, the problem I hadwas the Robin revell goloves where twisted and distorted as in his pose he is throwing a batarang... so decided to cut the hands from the Keaton Kit and use those hands on the Robin revell gloves. it worked out better than I thought it would. I then filled in the Keaton Body with sponge and glued a plastic top inside so I didnt have to fill the whole thing in with clay. I made the dreaded NIPPLES emoticon with cocktail sticks lol, I carefully cut the R logo from the revell kit to attach and made new lace stripes to put on the chest, I also resculpted the arms and shoulders to look more like Robins costume from Forever.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I then had to fix the robin head onto the cape, which again was a bit of a challenge as the original pose from the revell kit had that Robin crouched down with head out and no neck! So I build up a new neck for him to stand in a normal pose and trimmed the angle of the head to sit in a normal pose to the neck I made, that was it done in my eyes, I did end up cutting the torso and the figure in two halves to build up some more height in the torso area as he was still too small standing next to the other Forever 1/6th scale figures. Also filled out the shoulder cape edges a bit to better match his look from the movie after these pictures, again it wasn't 100% accurate but was best I could do.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Lastly on my end I primed the whole 1/th scale figure in Grey and will post off in the new year to be painted by a Pro here in the UK will update photos when that is done. emoticon

The Kilmer Sonar was a lot easier to make as there is already a 1/6th sculpt out there of the Sonar made of Resin and available from China, but I hated the head sculpt on it as didnt think it captured Kilmer that well... So I decided to buy the Revell Kilmer Kit, just for the head as that head was pretty spot on in likeness so it was just a basic cut the head of the resin version and cut the head part of the revell kit so they lined up then I build up the neck with epoxy to reinforce the neck. I admit I should have spent a bit more time sanding and smoothing the epoxy where I joined the revell head to the resin sculpt, but I'm happy with the end results, I painted this one myself and was done in gun metal in the end, I did experiment with some blues and blacks as the studio photos look blue silver sometimes in whatever light they where using, but after studying photos of the suit in normal light, I thought gun metal was the best look for the suit.

And here is my Display of the 2 of them with the Xensation Riddler/Two Face and Hot Wheels Elite Batmobile. Just waiting for Robin to be painted in January to finish this display off. Thanks for looking and if you have any questions then please ask, I'll try my best to help and answer them emoticon

Finally after all this time!! he is finished, just recieved these photos from the painter today. Could not be happier with the paint work done by Darren Carnell.

I totally dig both Robin suits and they don't get the love they deserve.

Can't wait to see this painted. The pose fits great with your Kilmer Sonar.

Re: Batman Forever Robin & Sonar Batman 1/6th Scale Custom

Thanks again Tony emoticon yeah that was the plan to have Robin and Sonar Kilmer in more of a standard hero pose. As don't know if you have seen the Revell versions of both of them or not... but they are in action poses and the Sonar pose in the Revell kit is good as kind of has him in the pose he was in the movie throwing the sonar batarang. The Robin Revell pose IMO is terrible he looks awkward and holds a batarang also in that kit. The Warner Bros Statue was what I was going to use at first as it was the easy option but after tracking one down it was too big next to the other 1/6th scale figures. Even cut him off the base he came on in hope it would change my mind, but it wasn't just the height as the body shape on that statue was much bigger too. So had to make a Robin the hard way but hopefully when it is painted in January it will all have been worth it.

I too wish the Robin Suits got a bit more love as they where beautifully sculpted by Miles Teves I believe... could be wrong there? My only gripe was that the Forever Robin Suit wasn't used throughout most of Batman & Robin and then they could have introduced the Robin Redbird Costume when he had his tiff with Batman and Poison Ivy sent out his signal, would have made more sense to introduce the new suit then. But even that wouldn't have saved that film lol, don't get me wrong Its grew on me over the years but I remember how excited I was after seeing Forever as a 10 year old to be first in line as a 12 year old at the cinema even missing school lol that Friday to watch Batman & Robin, that after the film ended I was in shock for about a week or two after seeing it, continually trying to convince myself that it was all a bad dream. As the actors said themselves it felt like they where filming a giant toy commercial.

Thanks Brin emoticon I would love to work on a suit someday but my real interest is the Forever suits and I think Paul, Uncle Ed & Jamie all offer great versions of the Panther,Sonar & Robin Forever suits. So no need to try any of those.

I am working on a new prop which I will be hopefully showing in a new thread soon once I have the prototype finished, there is any interest I will be offering it to fellow BOTB members providing I can get a run of them made at a reasonable price. And also been tidying up a few old Forever replica props to try to get them a little more movie accurate for my own personal display.

Thanks 89Batman, Uncle Ed and Red, it's been a long journey to get the Robin finished. I sent it off in February to be painted but the painter was back logged with work and what was suppose to take 2 months tops ended up being 9 months... but after seeing the picture... It was worth the wait.

I will get some pictures of the 4th them together when Robin arrives in the post.

Also I'll be starting a new topic very soon with something I've been working on this last year and can't wait to show you all the results emoticon
