Birds of Prey TV series 2002/2003

OK folks, When this was on TV back in 2003/2003 it met with a lot of negative feedback and poor viewership which IMO resulted in it being cancelled before it could even be developed. I honestly at the time was very disappointed with this and afterward managed to pick up a DVD box set of the entire first (and only) season. Well it sat on a shelf with all of my other box sets for (what, 14 years?) a while as I almost never get around to actually watching TY shows on DVD (I have all 7 seasons of Buffy, all 3 seasons of Star Trek, both seasons of Terminator the Sarah Conners Chronicles, Adam West's Batman etc, all unopened). Well last night I popped in the first disk and watched the first episode and I repeat my dissatisfaction at the early cancellation of the show. I thin it was pretty good, at least as god as Smallville (which ran 10 seasons, why I don't understand) if not better but it just didn't get a chance. I kind of always felt it was because they never had Batman in the show and people got impatient. Then again as with Smallville they didn't show Superman until the end of the last episode and we all know that was a CGI generated figure in the sky because Tom Welling refused to "suit up".

So let's hear it, why did everyone think this show as bad? Why didn't it get a shot to flourish? Thoughts? Insights? opinions?

Discuss..... :wink

I think part of the problem is that during 2003 we were really in a vacuum of batstuff. There was nothing. No movies, no shows, no good games...hell I could barely find toys. So for the first attempt at a TV show in the Gotham universe, I think it was a little too much to ask for people to care. I could be talking out of my ass here but I think if this show would have come later, say...right after TDK, it probably would've gotten more seasons.

I didn't realize it was '03 when it came out

I know that several people really disliked the interpretations of the characters; while others complained of bad acting.
While there were moments in the show where both of these were an issue (particularly the final episode that was a rush job), it also had some great episodes with excellent plot and acting. Mia Sara's Harleen Quinzel was always a highlight.

I think that this show really coulda had some potential. Too bad it didn't work out though. My daughter woulda loved to have a show with batgirl in it!

Yeah, it really is a shame. Maybe it was just ahead of it's time. Seems all of the superhero shows are on about 'meta-humans' now and that was the premise they used in BOP.

OK at risk of being shot down for being too controversial, I think it was and is better than Gotham.

Yes I said it.

I think the consensus at the time was- no more wheelchairs and let's see some costumes already. Too little too late to suit interests. All that was there was pretty girls like Charmed but no magic. I felt the same way when I watched it.

I watched it when it was on tv originally and really liked it. like ed i picked up the dvd box set a few years ago and watched it again. however I had the opposite reaction and didn't much care for it because the acting wasn't great. still it did have potential had they grown as actors and the story arcs got a little more complex.I agree that it's better than Gotham

One of the better comic to TV interpretations ever. IMHO.

Honestly I don't know if the general public was up for a female driven comic book show at the time. Plus it's lack of including Batman and or Robin and or Nightwing in any capacity was a sticking point for some. It definitely had room to grow, it wasn't perfect, it wasn't great but it was very solid and deserved a shot. Were they to re-imagine it now, I think it would do much better. This is the renaissance of comic TV after all. Remember the JWS Flash show didn't work at the time either, and it certainly wasn't bad.

I have the box set also. The wife and I watched it a few months back. I liked it. Thought it had a lot of room to grow. I agree that an appearance of Nightwing or Robin would probably done the show some good.
