80s Comic Version Batman

Hi everyone. Not posted in here for a long while, been busy over the last few years with work and further training (mature student) which was a shock to the old grey matter having to study again and sit exams which I thought were long behind me so costuming had taken a back seat for a while, but im back and starting 2017 with a costume build I have thought about in the past and have finally decided to try and make it a reality.

Its a story from a 1981 anual I had as a kid and the art work made a big impression on me. I just loved the look of Batman in this.

I love the look of the long ears and glove fins and I am looking forward to a bit more colour for a change to my usual 89 suit.

So I started by asking for a off the shelf Arkham cowl for Christmas to have a go at modifying.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I cut the neck off, padded the ears with foam and wire to straighten them, gave it a few coats of blue flexidip and added so white mesh to the eyes.

Glued the chest emblem to a grey lycra suit and tried it on to see how the muscle suit was looking. I haven't added any muscles to the for arms as I dont know how much room I will have in the gloves when I get them.

Found these on ebay, thought they would make a great functional utility belt.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I had to buy twice as many as a needed for the belt to swap some of the caps over to get the look I wanted.

I added heavy duty velcro to the center of my belt where the buckle will be and to the back also to fasen it. I then painted my it yellow using leather paint.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Next I printed out a buckle to scale to use as a template and cut it out of a sheet of plastic

I attached six of the metal capsules to the belt using pop rivets.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I then sanded the buckle I cut out, sprayed it gold to match the capsules and attached it using velcro.

Next I thought about how to tackle a neck piece for my cowl. I had the idea to use two balaclavas joined together to lengthen the neck and painting it with latex and plasti dip.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I then cut the face part out

Re: 80s Comic Version Batman

OK so I latexed and painted the briefs I made to colour match them and tried everything I have done so far on to see how its looking.

The neck piece is too long and needs trimming to stop it from bunching up, but I plan to trim the neck after I have done the cape to make sure I dont trim it too short. Im also thinking of attaching the cape to the neck piece but I will have to see about that when the cape is done.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

After taking the previous photo I decided the cowl was looking to dark compared to the neck piece so I gave the cowl a few more coats of plastidip to lighten it.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Think its looking a better match now.

So that everything up to date, sorry about the large number of updates so quickly but I have been busy since christmas. The up dates will be a little slower from now on. :wink

This weekend I plan to have ago at making a blue latex cape.

Very inspiring and motivating posts, thank you for sharing the making of your suit! The cowl looks great now, what kind of latex you used to cover the balaclava and the briefs?

Im just using a pretty standard mould making latex and mixing in a little acrylic paint to colour it.

OK made a start on the latex cape yesterday.
I had an old Vader cloak that has been sat in the back of the wardobe for a few years that I dont use so decided to make use of it and try somthing.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I cut the satin linning out to use as the base for the latex cape.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

I mixed some blue paint with latex and built up layers.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

It was looking a little dark as the blue paint I used was a cheap one and the pigment isn't very strong :down
So I tried painting a section with a lighter blue that I had but it came out too light so I need to darken it back down.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The cape needs a few more coats to even out the colour. I have bought a better quality brand of acrylic paint today and the shade of blue is much closer to the shade I want, but have run out of latex so it will have to wait for now. :frown
But at least the hard part is done and its latexed both sides ready for its final coats of colour. :up
