Brin,

Check this thread in the Runboard Help forums http://bakheva.runboard.com/t16733
As an Admin here you "should" be able to view it and respond. Maybe from there LG can assist you further.

Folks, Lesigner Girl worked hard on this. Let's give her the respect of trying it out and providing more feedback. A phone app will make a lot of people happier around here.

Thank you, Ed.

Brin, you're not supposed to see the code unless you look at the CSS in the board's control panel. What you're supposed to be seeing is a difference in the way the board itself looks.

Of the two pictures below, which one best represents the way the board looks to you on your iPhone?

Sorry this is off topic, but I'm making a Klingon mask out of latex for Halloween, and was wondering if anyone here is an expert on airbrushing with liquid latex and acrylic paints. I've read to mix it with ammonia and distilled water, but information concerning ratios is conflicting from source to source.

Also, any ideas on how to make a warrior costume for a Klingon woman?

If anyone here can answer those types of questions, which forum should I ask in? The one I thought would be most appropriate is now in your archives.

I've never sprayed the acrylic directly on latex by itself, nor have I actually sprayed it however what I have done in the past is thin down rubber cement with odorless mineral spirits (or they actually make a rubber cement thinner) and mixed the acrylic paint with that and applied it with a brush, I "believe" you can use a product called liquitex directly without using the rubber cement. It should spray pretty well if you thin it accordinglyy so it will spray.
I've also tinted liquid latex with acrylic and thinned it down with ammonia and sprayed that. It's gotta be real thin though and you'll need to clean your airbrush real fast or it will um up.
If you're anywhere near Danbury CT you're welcome to come by and work on your mask.

Thanks for the offer, Ed! I'm pretty sure I won't be anywhere near CT before Halloween, though.

I just finished practicing on a test piece with a mixture of latex, acrylic paint, ammonia, and distilled water, but I think I thinned it out too much. Better to start out too runny than too thick while practicing, though, right? At least I was able to clean it easily with window cleaner, followed by distilled water, a cotton swab, etc. So I don't need to put the water in it? What ratio of latex/acrylic/ammonia do you recommend? How much lighter do I need to make the mixture than I want for the final result? I know tinted latex gets much darker when it dries, but I don't know how much darker it gets when mixed with ammonia.

Also, what psi do you recommend setting my air compressor for shading the cranial ridges?

Thanks for your reply!

I would say as far as starting out too runny you could let it sit out uncovered for a little while and as the water and ammonia evaporate it will thicken back up. I don't think you need both the ammonia and the distilled water, when I was doing this I just used the ammonia. I never really sprayed it with an airbrush so I can't suggest a pressure. It's all trial and error. Same with the mix ratios. That said, it's not the ammonia and water that effect the color, it's just the latex and tint. You can mix a few small batched at different ratios and apply it to a piece of paper (use something cheap, like Q-tips to apply it) and compare the dried samples until you get what you're looking for. Also what I would ""probably" do is get the main parts of the mask painted in your "base color" and if you want some darker or lighter areas (in the ridges) perhaps try a dry brush technique with some acrylic paint (or a mix) before the latex base coat fully cures. (it can be dry to the touch but probably only a hour or so after it was applied as opposed to having cured several days). With all of that said, do these experiments on something other than your mask (learn what you can on something else, you can just pour out some latex onto a foil pan or something and let it dry a few days and test on that.)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips, Ed! I have plenty of latex to try different things, and am going to go play around some more with it now. :-)

If everyone helped each other, the world would be a much better place. :-)

Last night, I realized it was a mistake to tint my latex before pouring the mask, because it looks better if I start with an untinted mask and paint over that. If I ball up my hand in a fist, I can see yellow undertones on my knuckles that look almost exactly like untinted/dried latex. I think I've almost found the perfect formula.
