New methods of smoothing armor?

Hi everyone!

Curious what methods are available to smooth out this 89 latex armor?

I've read some posts on sanding, plasti-dipping, using acetone, etc, but as many of those posts are dated, I'm thinking there might be some new methods out there. Any ideas?

It depends on the quality of the latex, is it very soft, hard, or is it cracking-dry? Normally you would be able to pour a thin layer of thinned latex over it to get a new layer, BUT you will have to clean it first! You need to remove dust and mostly any oil or fat from touching it! Normally you can use acetone, but do it outside because of the fumes! Also you have to use the industrial black latex, the strong one, not the mask latex. Only other way is to sand it down if the quality allows it and then clean it and spray Plasti Dip on it. I would try first on a separate piece of latex to make sure you get the result you are looking for! When I use the Plati-dip outside I also use gloves and eye protection, sometimes its windy and I try to avoid eye contact with any spray.

Thanks for the reply, Phantombat! Any particular brand of industrial latex you might recommend? I'd rather not trial and error that too much. :)

I would start with lacquer thinner and a scotchbrite pad. Wrap the scotchbrite around a soft piece of foam or a sponge soak it in lacquer thinner then scrub away at the armor. , Keep wetting the pad. The thinner will break down the top layer of latex making it easier to smooth. If that doesn't do it by itself (or you're not patient enough to work it slowly) then get a mouse sander and sand it down with that, followed by the scotchbrite/thinner process. It's time consuming but will get the job done. Take my word for it, I've done a lot of this stuff.

I have been using a mouse sander with some decent results but haven't tried the thinner. Definitely giving it a shot. Thanks!!
