89 Cape Questions

Hey everyone! I read the 89 cape had the panels connected with just latex and silk gauze for strength. Does anyone have a good pic of what this process would be like? And how would that result in the ribbing effect seen on the outside of the cape?

For the life of me I cannot make it out from these pics.

Further... what was actually used for the ribbing? Was it just a latex filling in the sag between the panels?

Re: 89 Cape Questions

Great question! They used different capes in the movie, the special effects capes for the scenes with the spreading and the flying, then the short version to use in the car, then the walking capes. The capes mostly used have been made in a silicone mold. They just sprayed in the latex and then put in the textile, no sewing needed. Only the prototype was sewn. That is why the outside of the capes was the same on the walking capes, As for the FX capes , I have no information what kind of material was used for the ribbing.

Re: 89 Cape Questions

I so wish I could answer this. Most of our "cape experts" are currently MIA.
Paul Wares (PJWares) or Gary (89Batman) would likely be the best guys to answer this question.
Gary,s a member of our staff but he has some health problems and hasn't been here for a while. I'll try to shoot him an email.
