Functional Grappler Gearmotor - Diagram

Below is a functioning grappler motor that raises or lowers 300 lbs at 1 foot per second. It coordinates with a functional Batman 1989 utility belt, and is the smallest commercially available that includes these minimum specifications:

- Horsepower: 0.545
- DC Volts: 38
- DC Amps: 3
- Motor dimensions: 3.25” diameter x 7” long, 5.5 lbs
- plus Gearhead: 10:1 gear ratio, 3.25” square x 4.6” long, 7 lbs
- 100-Foot Cable

The unit needs a 115-Watt DC power pack, slung from the utility belt and wired through the belt’s innards to the central oval shaft of the buckle -- this for electrical and physical connection to the grappler motor. The motor connects to the flanged shaft of the belt buckle with an insulated steel locking tube, raising or lowering the Dark Knight by the utility belt while leaving arms and legs free. Actual latching of the belt is with a seatbelt connection in back, not by the fake front buckle, which deceives attackers trying to unhitch it.

At 3.25” x 11.6”, the grappler motor assembly resembles the Batman Animated Series design more than any other. Whether this assembly could be built any smaller is a tough question. With 24k gold wire and terrifically powerful special magnets? Maybe. But even this smallest standard assembly costs over $6,000 on the industrial market, not counting a custom power pack.

Pretty cool stuff. But a 7lbs grappling hook would eventually tire even the Dark Knight himself. Nevertheless, pretty cool stuff.

HMMMMM, Keaton said it best, "You weigh a little more than a 108!"

Re: FUNCTIONAL GRAPPLER GEARMOTOR

You got it Sean! Say Keaton/Batman weighed around 190 in a functioning suit with accessories. So when Vale said 108, he figured the load was within spec -- and they barely escaped the onrushing car in time. So he came better prepared at the museum!

Toast: Although Batman can anchor the grappler motor to his belt with a right-angle fastener, and not have to hang on, that still doesn't count the shooter and hook or penetrating darts. Clearly, his technology is beyond today's commercially available state of the art.

Zane,

You are on top of it with cutting edge real stuff as usual I see. Good to see it. Can't wait to see someone implement it.

Regarding the movie you were off on a few things though I believe. He went form the museum to the car chase and used the cable then didn't he? It's been a while for me. Anyway I do not think the speed was the issue for them traveling toether up the wire I think it was the distance. She lied as most girls do about their weight so he couldn't make it the whole way up and had to jump for it so she could continue on up. If he had had two cable grapplers perhaps he could have saved the jump and gotten all the way to the safty of the upper ledge. Just my take on it.

As it is. Vicky would never have been able to hold onto that thing when he left it with her. Crazy direction there.

Paul -- Ha! You're right about the museum -- and after my combo work, no less! :embarassed It's a good one on why Vale's weight was crucial. If not slower speed (which I admit looked no slower), then my guess would be the motor overheating and threatening to stall, or risking the breaker tripping out due to overload for too long. (A little gearmotor smoking wouldha' been fun.) So lightening the load relieved the motor's overload and excessive current-draw -- and he had to take a flying leap. [LATER ADDED: In re-watching the film, the hoisting device stops dead, maybe 20 feet below the overhead bridge. This indicates the device's breaker tripped. So Batman reset the unit, realizing it would trip again due to overloaded weight, and so sent Vale up the rest of the way alone.]

Thanks guys for the good words. The motor plan is real and identified by the manufacturer as an R32 frame size. And a trampoline's a plus for tests!
