Sonar Functional Belt Buckle.
Hi Bros,
I have been working on this on and off for the past year trying to get it right before showing something off. So I haven't post much recently, just wanted to give you guys a look at what I've been working on.
FUNCTIONAL SONAR BUCKLE
This has been something I've wanted to do for quite some time. Henry Wayne did a great job on his functional METAL PANTHER BUCKLE and it inspired me to take on the challenge of attempting to make my own Functional Sonar Buckle. I reached out to Bob Causey who was able to help by providing me with original molds of the frontplate of the sonar and the strap molds with the clips in place. So first and foremost, A massive Thank you to Bobby!
EARLY PROTOTYPE
I originally modelled the inside of my backplate after Henry's Panther. After some trial and error, I decided my prototype was a little too rough and not as nice as I wanted the final piece to look, I did it all by hand up to this stage. But wasn't happy so in the end I brought what I had so far into 3D modelling. Here is the early pictures of how it started out.

3D PRINT PROTOTYPE
As said took what I had and brought it into 3D Design via FUSION360 with help from a friend Colin Nichol who was able to 3D design what I had and between us we worked on how to support the locking mechanism more freely. And have them screwed in for extra support with it being a resin piece and not metal.

FINAL VERSION
Backplate was 3D printed along with locking clips and buttons. Then a final clean up of the resin pieces where done and all screwed and locked into place. A few tweaks here and there and it was done.

Re: Sonar Functional Belt Buckle Project
Very nice. Is it safe to assume that the buckle hard parts will be mostly plastic with the straps being rubber?
We had a guy here (Henry Wayne) a few years back that did some great Panther and 89/Returns buckles out of cast metal but though they were fantastic to look at and play with the weight of them rendered then all but unwearable. They also couldn't be displayed on a suit unless they were backed with something like Velcro to hold them up. In the end I let all of the copies I had go and went back to all rubber belts for my suits.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. :up
Also, I might be able to hook you up with Clooney and Redbird parts. I need to check downstairs and see if I still have them.

Re: Sonar Functional Belt Buckle Project
Thanks Ed, at the minute everything is made in hard resin plastic. Personally I don't have a desire to do them in metal so if the interest is not there with others then they will stay resin. The screen used functional Panther belt buckle & Sonar buckle where made in resin. The straps will indeed be rubber urethane. I still have to try my method out to have the straps attach to the resin clips to give it the effect it's all one piece. I have a good method in place which will cure the both of them together as one and create the effect that they are one piece.
That's great news you may be able to help out with a Clooney & Redbird belt symbol. I really appreciate it man :)

Re: Sonar Functional Belt Buckle Project
Thanks Todd & MattgomeryBurns, will hopefully open a list on these in the new year 👍 still have a few things to sort out with sorting attachment options to the belt straps. But great to see some interest in it.

Re: Sonar Functional Belt Buckle Project
I have castings from this mold.
Bob D. cast the straps as single pieces with hard urethane in the clasp, transitioning into a softer urethane past the clasp so the rest of the belt was flexible. It wasn't a resin clasp joined to a urethane strap. He was pretty proud of that. Said that was how the real ones were done. If you contacted him, he might share some tips.
I would even do the top buckle plate in the harder urethane and just do the mechanism in resin.
Stunning job. Just incredible.
