I've been thinking about this all day.
There is no way to describe the vibe to someone.
That vibe like when you turn the page and WHAM...
...you spend ten minutes just absorbing the panels before you even think about reading the words.

LEAPS OFF THE PAGE just doesnt cover it.

If you have to explain then they wont understand.

"Because he's Batman dammit"

I still can't think of anything in the form of words that can truly describe what I feel when I read a Batman comic. Its ridiculous really...I mean he is a fictional character, yet here I am wishing he was real. He's everything that I want to be, yet would never want. Who and what he is comes with a VERY big price. He IS Batman...nuff said.

Batman is Sherlock Holmes and Bruce Lee in one, dressed like Dracula. That's not four words, but it's the way I usually describe Batman to people whoe don't really know much about him or get the appeal.

It's the intellectual side of Batman that the general public really have no clue about because it's never been adequately shown in the films. It's that combination of intelligence and physicality that really makes Batman who he is, and Sherlock Holmes is a very good analogy because they are very similar - both characters simply decided as young men to fight crime and went ahead and self-taught themselves every possible skill and bit of knowledge they thought they'd need, becoming superb analytical minds and formidable fighters (even Holmes was known to be a good marksman, fencer and boxer).

Plus, he's a superhero who dresses as a supervillain - he should literally be the most evil-looking thing in Gotham - he's an angel in demon's clothing, all the better to fight superstitious, cowardly criminals.

Plus, the non-killing thing is another huge aspect of him. It's a moral line he won't cross, ever - even though it's incredibly difficult. It'd be much easier to fight crime and save lives if he took a life now and then - even if only very rarely (like a policeman might). There are plenty of times Batman could kill in self-defence or in defence of others and no-one would think worse of him - it'd be completely justified. But instead he chooses the much harder path and tries to save lives without ever taking one. It's incredibly noble.

In conclusion, I have not helped you at all in finding 4 words to describe Batman :) I could go on and on with further reasons why he's so cool.

But the fact that you *can't* sum him up so easily shows how complex and great a character he is - and it's understandable that most people aren't aware of it, because the movies have barely touched on half of it.

In all my life and even in reading others explanations of what the love of this character means to them I have come to this conclusion. You either get it, or you don't. This character means so many different things to so many different people. If you love him for whatever reason, you become a part of a very very large thing. For those that dont get it..no amount of rational or eloquent phrasing of what Batman means to you will ever make that light bulb come on. Batman exists for those that need a Batman, to whatever level and extent that may be, and that is good enough for me.

I first read this and I was completely stumped. How DO you describe someone or something so close to your heart? It's almost, literally, impossible.

Batman is...What more could anyone need. He just is. He calls out to the good guy in all of us and does what we can't do in real life, which is beat the living dog**** out of someone who desperately needs it.

Batman is... someone a child can look up to and admire for standing up against the forces of injustice and villainy.

Batman is as... it was said in Batman Begins. A living, incorruptible symbol of right.

In four words...Batman is a hero.

Cheers!
