I'm not too sure about the bootcamp model, I prefer consistent, long-term work. That said, if it works for him and he picked up some techniques and other knowledge, then brilliant.

As a 20+ year martial artist, I concur that knowing how to punch and kick correctly is very satisfying. It also gives you more options for cardio.

For anyone interested, here's a great post

I'm with SgtTom on the abs thing, if I get them as a side-effect, great. But I train for performance. If I'm strong and fast with good endurance, seeing my abs is not going to make my rugby any better.

That, and I really like beer and food.

This morning I squatted over 1.5x my bodyweight. I know it's not that big a deal, and I'm sure there are people on here lifting a lot more than that, especially if they're concentrating on Maximal Strength. But it was one of my goals and one of my milestones. It felt great to get it, especially since I have not been prioritising max strength this last while as rugby season has just started back and I'm concentrating on power endurance (Hill Sprints and fast runs of different durations).

UPDATE:

Just completed a 12 week periodization strength program that focuses on 3 core lifts (bench, squat, and power clean).

1 Rep Max Results are as follows:
Body Weight: 192 lbs to 202 lbs
Bench Press: 295 lbs to 335 lbs
Squat: 400 lbs to 425 lbs
Power Clean: 255 lbs to 275 lbs

I am restarting the program again, but using new weights based on percentages of my previous max lifts.

New Goals:
Body Weight: Same
Bench Press: 350 lbs
Squat: 455 lbs
Power Clean: 300 lbs.

Good work mate, and nice attainable goals for the next 12 weeks.

Thanks bro. I'm going as Supes for Halloween and my local comic con this year, so trying to bulk up to fit the part. This is the first time I will have worn a tight fitting lycra-style costume, so I want to play the part well. I felt good about my previous goals, and met them all but the squar. I hope to meet these new goals in 3 months.

Being big helps with the lycra, but you don't wanna be carrying any spare flesh either.

I wish I could still sport my Batman year 1... *sigh* Lycra/spandex is unforgiving.

My health and weight have yoyo'd ever since I got back from the war in 2010. I'm hopefully on the right track to get back into my pre-deployment weight.

For some people that is a problem, and I don't mean to come off as an arrogant prick (it always seems like I come off that way when I say this), but "spare flesh" as you put it has never been a problem for me. I am very lean, even at 205 lbs. I struggle to keep weight on more then I do losing it, and if I quit working out altogether I would be 180 lbs soaking wet. Last check of body fat % I was at 4.5 %.

Take :pics Your 12 weeks goals sound great!

I have been a little off with my workouts as of late. Been having some issues with my jobs and hours have increased. Trying to find the balance again and hope to get back on track come November.

You don't seem like a prick or arrogant, just telling the truth.
