Re: I've seen Superman Returns

As one guy put it on another group: 'they shot for greatness but missed the mark, had good things but fizzled by the end.'

I found that only 5 to 10% of the US go to movies but maybe 15 to 25% go to major blockbusters.

After some research, a pal converted the 1978 SUPERMAN US box office to current value, estimated it was 8 times as much BUT he could've been wrong. Anyway, it's 1 billion, 72 million dollars just for the US box office!

In 78, it was 134 million US box office. Cost was 55 million.

Re: I've seen Superman Returns

OK so I finally saw it last Friday in IMAX. here are my 2 cents.
overall i liked it but a lot of things bug me. weird feeling.

The things i don't like but that don't bother that much.
- brandon looks 25 and he's been gone for 5 years.
- looney lex. not as bad as in the donner movies though
- the look of Krypton. STAS got it right in my book

now the things i really didn't like.
- Superman has a son...... dear god i hated that. unecessary and almost a blasphemy to me :cussing

- I think we all agree that Superman stands for virtue, justice and all that. then why the hell is he making a pass at lois in that flying scene when he knows she has a child, is engaged and maybe about to get married.....supes is a bastard now?

- When superman get on lex's land there's a little kryptonite and he becomes very weak but then when he's lifting the whole piece of land and he's surrounded by green rock it doesn't seem to affect him...

- finally i saw it in IMAX which was very cool for the plane scene but the first scene to use 3D was Clark in smallville looking at the fields with the zoom on his pretty face and the violins pumping.
now i don't have any problem witht he suit but a lot of those scenes focusing on brandon pretty face are very annoying especially since I felt like it took about 20 minutes of the movie.

- oh yeah and the plane scene.... lois doens't get a single bruise?? she should have 20 concussions!

- also all the "s" ont he suits bugged me. i mean does it take him 5 months to make it every time he needs one?

Now what i liked
-the plane scene
- the whole daily planet, jimmy, perry... is good
- brandon makes a great clark/supes (albeit a bit young)
- the superman "feel"

voila that's about what i think of the movie and once again i actually enjoyed it despite all my comments.
I definitely need a second viewing though
but i'd recommend not seeing it in IMAX as weird as it seems.
I'm open to debate too.

Insert Invisotext just in case I say something someone doesn't wanna read.

Well it did affect him. Brandon does a good job in pulling off the whole attitude of Superman. To Superman, is lifting that had killed him, it woulda been a good death. And as far as the whole "little piece" well when he arrives on the rock he notices it, but ignors it. Freaking Lex jammed that piece INTO him, affecting him inside and out. MUCH MUCH worse than being surrounded by a few pieces.

I personally loved the movie. Then again there aren't many movies I don't like. Even still, many complained it didn't have enough action sequences. But what no one realizes is that who was he supposed to fight? Lex is HUMAN. Sorry kids but you can't go beating up humans, all it would take is a flick from Superman.

Enjoy the movie and move on.

True I forgot about that. but it seemed to me that he got much weaker even before hand.
And like I said I did enjoy the movie it's that it could have been so good ... :(

I liked Spacey's Luthor most because he could be really vicious. Hackman did Luthor mostly for humor and did'nt seem that mean a guy.

Nicholson's Joker would laugh and maybe say something comical but he did it while he was twisting the knife that he stabbed you in the back with! ringodog

I agree about the variable effects of kryptonite being a little much. When Superman first lands on the rock he doesn't even seem to notice that he's lost his powers until Lex slugs him. Later with big chunks of kryptonite almost impaling him he still has enough strength to lift that entire chunk of earth into space. I get that it's through sheer force of will and that kryptonite's nothing more than a plot device with wide creative latitude, but it seemed too inconsistent to me.

Routh and Bosworth both looked way too young for it to be a sequel. Superman was 30 when he emerged from the Fortress in the first film, which would make him at least 35 now even assuming the events of the first two films took place within a mere few months. It's an easy thing to look past I suppose, but I would have preferred using these actors in a new, fresh take rather than a sequel to a nearly 30 year old franchise.

Lots of things to love in SR, but a few to groan at or at least scratch your head over. I'm hoping it spawns some sequels and that they strike out in their own direction moving forward.

I really like the suit a lot, don't even mind the \S/ symbols to add texture. The boots seem way overdone with them though, and the soles are way too thick to be worn inside a pair of Clark's shoes. Small gripe, I know.

funny i'm the opposite :)
the boots didn't really bother but the over-use of "s" on the suit kinda did. nothing major though.

one thing i just recalled.
in Brainac Attacks everyone laughs when Lois says "you always catch me when i fall"
but i find SR's "I forgot how warm you are" just ridiculous.
