Those ROCK!
I'd love to start a thread about making one of those straight jackets for our collections.

Re: The Inmates / Straight Jackets

A lot of time was spent on making these jackets. We researched different ways of making them for about 6 weeks. In the end each jacket was made differently but both looked well together.

The Joker jacket was largely made by Jason I just added the leather straps. It was sown by his mom who is a nurse. She often makes scrubs and used one of these patterns for the pants. The Joker jacket she stitched more or less free hand using a shirt as a basic pattern. She added a few details such as a seem across the front of the shoulders and "belt loops" to hold the leather straps on the back.

Harley's jacket was modified from a costume straight jacket. Real straight jakcets start at about $300, and as much as I'm a stickler for realism this seemed a bit much. There were about three different costume jackets around town at Halloween but all sucked. None were open in the back, one had straps in the photo on front of the package but not on the garment, and none had matching pants.

I finally settled on the one that looked the sturdiest and starting modifying. I split the shirt down the back and stitched seems into both sides. I hemmed up the shirt so it was just below Christine's waist line, not tying up her knees. She then dyed the bright white fabric in very diluted yellow to give a bit of an aged look.

I attached a leather strap and matching buckle on both sleeves. I put three buckle and strap sets down the back.

Jason went a whole different approach with the jacket and wanted to "look like he'd been wallowing in filth for a year". He did a great job. I didn't want to touch it after he'd applied the different yellow, brown, black, and red acrylic paints.

The words "Arkham" were spray painted on using a paste board stencil that was held in place by spray adhesives.

I'll add some pics of the leather straps down the back of Harley's jacket.
